Move Over Ma Deuce

Quote:
Low-rate initial production of 800 revolutionary XM806 lightweight .50-caliber machine guns will begin in February. A pierced primer had halted progress, said Lt. Col. Thomas Ryan, product manager of crew-served weapons for Program Executive Office Soldier. Delivery, which was expected by 2014, is now delayed 17 months.

While no one likes a delay, finding this fault early in the process has allowed the Army to build a more reliable and durable weapon, Ryan said. The service re-engineered the bolt, adjusted the fixed head space and conducted new tests. Officials have put 300,000 rounds downrange and the results have been strong.

The XM806 cuts the weight of the 128-pound M2 by half and reduces recoil by 60 percent. It also boasts an effective range of 2,000 meters, 170 better than the M2. The machine gun, which has a manual safety, allows for quick barrel changes that do not require adjustments for head space and timing.

Relief also is on the way for the A-gunner tapped to carry the tripod. The XM205 weighs 13 pounds less than the 44-pound M3 now being carried. The XM205 collapses to less than 50 percent of deployed height.

Cool... I wouldn't like to lug a ma deuce around. Much as I hate to see JMB's classic go the way of the dodo...

The deuce was my favorite (next to the old MK19), I hate to see her go but I have to admit that if I were setting one up I would appreciate the weight savings and the advantage of a lower tripod.

WTF? That thing is super ugly.

Headspace and timing?

I will say this, although I love the M2HB point-five-oh... a lot of the ones we have in our inventory are dated. Thus, they break a lot. Now, that would be all good and fine if we had depo level weapons personelle who could actually fix them. I dunno how many times we sent them off to get fixed (feeder paws broke a lot and FTLIB or FTF for some reason) we'd get them back still broken.

I think we had one reciever dated in the 1940s. At least one from the 1960's. Still, when mama deuce is barkin, people listen. (and things get broken heheh). Good article, thanks.

That thing is as ugly as sin. Hard to argue against the weight savings though.

Took a long time to find something better. I don't think the m2 will ever be fully replaced. It has had it's place in history unopposed for a long time.

Boom Stick, the last time I actually saw what happened in that video, it sent a crack straight through the feed tray. Oh yeah, and it was a lieutenant that had done it. If this XM806 truly requires no head space or timing adjustments, that would be a major break through in idiot proofing.

It'll take some time (and action) to really prove its better. Think of all the other new weapons that were better than what they replaced. Think of how many of the replaced weapons are still around doing what they did those many years ago that many of us would rather have than the newer weapons that replaced them.

Has it been 20 years, already, since the last attempt? Time flies. If you listen closely, you can hear JMB laughing.

Super ugly is correct.

The M2 and M60 were my favorites. They were the only real guns in my arms room, along with the 1911.

Of course, they replaced the 1911 with that plastic/alloy/too-many parts Beretta thingy.
