Springfield Armory SAR 4800

Having trouble getting any straight answers on an FAL I ran across. It's a '93 model S/A SAR 4800; the owner is wanting in the $900 area for it. The rifle is supposed to be un-fired, comes with the original box and two mags, but no manual, etc. I have one friend who insists this is way too high of a price, but looking online it would appear to be pretty decent. Any opinions on the price and especially the rifle in general? And would the cost be worth it when you factor in ditching that God-awful thumbhole stock and replacing it with the standard FAL fare, along with the U.S. compliant parts? Thanks for any help here.

Your friend is an idiot. That is a great price. The SAR 48 and 4800 were imported from Brazil by Springfield Armory. Probably the best FALs short of Belgian out there. They are 100 percent Imbel factory built rifles. The 4800s were brought in for a short time after Bush Srs Executive Order. Ive got a SAR 48 and a Belgian FAL. Not much difference in them, some would argue the SAR is a bit better.

Thanks. Thought about offering just a bit less (to cover sales tax - it's on consignment in a shop). This friend claims I should be able to pull off a used DSA FAL for around $1000, but that's not what I'm seeing online. Appreciate the feedback.

I agree - your friend needs for FAL-ducation. Other than the goofy thumbhole stock (of course you can fix that), these are great rifles. I have an SAR-48 and it is VERY well made. I'd say that $900 is a great price for it.

Thanks fellas. Called the guy back, and no-go on the offer of $900 out the door. I guess now I have to determine if I'm going to let $76 in sales tax stop me. Sucks to be cheap.

Went ahead and picked it up; makes a cheapskate pucker buying something he hopes was worth it. Anyway, on to the tech stuff - how to possibly get rid of that glommed-on abortion that's attached to the end of the barrel. Fake muzzle break? I'm sure it's been welded/soldered on. And then on to the 922r compliant parts so I can have a real FAL stock set. Hope FALs are easy to work on....I'll need to swap in a U.S.-made trigger, hammer and sear.....

Thanks for the info on the SAR.

I don't think that your friend is a idiot, he is a complete retard, "a used DSA for $1000" instead of a factory built Brazilian FAL? - That statement alone definitely qualifies him as a complete retard! - DSA's are good rifles (especially older STG's) i have 2, but i also have a SAR48, a FN licensed Brazilian built FAL - It's like comparing a M1A built on GI parts & a Government built M-14 (minus select fire capability)

Also, if your lucky your 4800 has a threaded barrel that is intact, some of them were blind pin welded about 1in from the end of the fake FH - Look on the FAL Files for excellent info on your 4800, awesome buy by the way! you scored my friend!

I would take a basic Imbel FAL over a DSA, anyday.

Thanks. Replaced the H/T/S and gas piston with U.S. made parts, as well as nixed the ugly thumbhole stock with a U.S. made buttstock, pistol grip, and handguards (now 922r compliant). I also removed the faux flash hider (blind pinned and threaded barrel) and am waiting now for a freshly re-parked Belgian combo device to arrive and thread on it. I stuck all of the original parts in the safe (too bad Uncle Sam won't let me keep it all intact and still have the "correct" FAL furniture on it). Have put a few rounds through it and already love the rifle. Can't wait to get out and run some more through it. My wife would kill me, but if I run into another one at this price, I'll have to have two!
