| Thumbhole stock replacement?
Can the thumbhole stocks that come on some AK's be replaced with a standard buttstock and pistol grip? Is it simply a matter of unscrewing them, or is there a difference in the receiver configuration? Thanks in advance. I'm looking at a nice milled receiver AK, but its got that darned thumbhole stock on it.

FWIW... I made that swap on an Egyptian MAADII that I had ... there may be some BATFE compliance issues you may have to concider , before you swap that out...

Check out Ironwood Designs
A few options there + a gr8 rep from what I've read.
I've never dealt with them(yet), but I would without hesitation. |

if your talking about a post ban chinese version, some of the receivers were cut on a slant to discourage replacement, some were not cut
if its a slant cut receiver Iron wood stocks bolt right up with minimal final fitting, and count as compliance parts
i believe all of the post ban milled receiver chinese ak's were slant cut,i have a Mak-91 milled receiver that i fitted a legend stock set to,it took me a total of 3 hours to do the job,and only lost 3/8 of an inch off of over all length
havnt tried a slant cut one yet

| Most definatly there is. On post band aks they were not part of the Brady bill but are part the 89 importation bill. In order to put on a bayo lug or change out the thumbhole stock (I am trying to remeber how it goes.) There are somthing like 15 parts to an Ak like reciever, barrel, stock, trigger, pistol grip etc. Out of the 15 parts I do believe 7 need to be U.S. parts. Which is pretty dumb and AK is an AK no matter who makes the parts. Quote: |

| Yes, I had one and if you but up a normal stock it would not sit flush to the reciever. I sent mine to Krebs and he added metal to the slant to square it up. Cant even tell now.

To to legal you need 5 us parts on a NON threaded barrel gun and 6 us parts if your ak has a threaded barrel!
Easy parts to change are
Trigger group counts as three US parts
Stock set
Handguards counts as one us part
Pistol grip counts as one us part
Buttstock counts as one us part
Gas piston counts as one use part
Slant break if threaded on counts as one us part.
You can also use mags with a US made follower or US made floor plate (Each would count as one part) but then you should change all the mags you have to make sure your legal and they can not stick you with something.
So easy way to switch if buy an Ironwood stock set So three parts there and a trigger group three more parts your set.

You can not have any more than 10 imported parts out of the countable 16 parts on an AK to be 922r complaint. The 16 countable parts are receiver, barrel, trunnion, muzzle attachments(flash hiders, muzzle brakes, barrel nuts), bolt, bolt carrier, gas piston, trigger, hammer, disconnecter, buttstock, pistol grip, handguards (upper & lower only count as one part), magazine body, magazine follower, magazine floorplate.
As far as the slant cut receiver goes, as others stated, about the only option for pre-made buttstocks is Ironwood Designs unless you have the skills and know how to make/modify one yourself. The only way I know to tell if a rifle has a straight cut or a slant cut receiver is to remove the thumbhole buttstock, there are no external indicators that you can see without doing this.

Just for reference HERE is a slant cut Norinco with a Romanian buttstock (which is for a straight cut receiver) Looks kinda funny, but it does work while saving up some bones for an Ironwood Design buttstock.
