Snyper762,, also many foreign governments had a habit of counterboring the muzzles, as a cost saving measure rather than replacing barrels, if the muzzle or crown was damaged.
Although I imagine the muzzle blast from a shortened 8mm could be generous, depending on how short you go. If I was you, I'd start at 2 inches, which should remove any cleaning rod wear area. I've heard the 17" barreled Persian 8mm Carbines could challenge a howitzer for muzzle blast!
This is when you need to have friends with the best toys, such as a bore scope!
Also, something I just noticed, don't know if it's the angle or not, but on the section of barrel between the shoulder, and the rear sight. Is that section slightly tapered or same diameter in that 1-5/8" area?
