Paratrooper sks?

What's y'alls opinion of them? Always really liked the sks but the size did it in for me. The cut down model seems like it'd be mighty handy. It'd be pretty much a fun gun as my evil little m14 and soon to be finished bula xm21 have most "serious use" scenarios covered. My have they gotten pricey though.

Do they have the same Leatherman tooth pick built into them like the full size?

Yup but a few inches shorter.

The M14 is longer, so why does the SKS length bother you?

I've always wanted a shorter barrel on an SKS as well, though.

25 years ago para models were in abundance.....now not so much. You could buy a case of them for $65.00@ - sometimes even less. Very handy in the shorter config....

I had 4 of them at one time. Down to 1 now. I wish I would have kept another. I really like the short barrel models. They use to advertise them as paratrooper or "cowboys companion".

I shot many 1000's of rds thru 2 of them. Very accurate, little to no recoil. I taught my son to shoot centerfire rifles on it when he was about 10. He took to it really good. I bought some Tapco 30rd mags for one and used to play a game, steel plates at 100yds, shoot till you miss. I got tired of reloading mags for him. He rarely missed. A great confidence builder for a young shooter, or any shooter.

I'm tempted to buy another, but can't bring myself to spend $400 + for a rifle I used to pay under $100 for.

Well I'm picking it up this weekend. Comes with a jungle stock to boot. Should be fun. Guess it's time to pick up some ammo and stripper clips!

Thanks from BigJon and Dougboffl

When my son got old enough to shoot a rifle while deer hunting (We're dog hunters) I got to scouting rifles for him. Back then everybody was still shooting 742 Remingtons. I looked at a Mini 30 for him but was no way I was gonna pay that for a kid to beat around hunting. I was paying $79 for Norinco SKSs back then & run up on a "Cowboy Companion" but it was more, $119 I bought that, stripped the orange varnish offa the stock & worked the trigger a little (Actually swapped a whole trigger grp out with another rifle) and the kid killed a dump truck full of deer with it. Don't sell that little cartridge short, NEVER had to track a deer that was shot with it or my mini 30. Bought a spam can of Wolf hp ammo & still using outta it. $400 for what it is & what it will do is a bargain compared to similar alternatives.

Used to own one about 35 years ago. It was reliable, accurate and very handy. Sold it when the AK Hunter rifles became available because they had aperture sights and had detachable magazines. Had a Hunter with detachable magazines but it had feeding problems.

I picked up a SKS-M last weekend at a gun show. The SKS type M is a Paratrooper that was factory modified to accept regular AK mags (not the SKS specific duckbill mags). It was $425 out the door. I have been looking for a SKS that accepts AK mags for bit, infact, I paid $175 less than the last SKS-M I saw.
