I attended an OPFOR weapons course at Aberdeen Proving Ground. We shot real AK-74s on full auto... scary. On full auto, that thing is so controllable you could shoot your signature onto the target. I'm glad I was never on the other end of one.

Thanks from Tommo, High Hat, 1MOA and 1 others

THIS..
Also the wound ballistics are pretty impressive with the russian ammo.

If you want the softest shooting rifle I can think of, get the 74. The weight of the AK and the caliber of the 45...it shoots super soft. Like a 22LR almost. It really is something you have to shoot.

Cheers.

Bubba melon wound ballistics

I have 10 or so semi auto AK47s, and 1 semi auto AK74. The AK74 was the last buy. I bought 3 cans (1080 rounds) when I bought the AK74, and then about 20+ magazines for it. The brake is real effective, and is a pleasure to shoot.

Melon shooting - I get some over ripe mush melons from time to time for free, and the wound ballistics on these melons are scary with both rounds. But the AK74 round (5.45mm by 39mm) tends to do more exit wound blow out. Fist size holes with a good seed evacuation pattern and sever cracking of the outer melon shell. Some times the complete melon will blow apart. I would say it would be a devastating wound if shot by it. I have not shot any melons with 5.56 by 45mm NATO rounds yet, and I don't know why.
Just as a note the 308 rounds tend to go thru and thru with these melons, with maybe a slight cracking of the outer melon shell.

Thanks from Tommo

YES! The '74 is my centerfire plinker...a fun carbine. The '47 is a classic.

I have both and the 74 I like the best.
Softer/flatter shooting and more accurate.
Cutaway of the Russian 7n6 "poison" bullet.

I was never a fan of the triangle folding stocks. My AK 74 in 5.56 has the Ak 100 series stock. I say with the others get both. I am looking at purchasing a 7.62x39 AK sometime this year.

Thanks from Glashaus

At one time the 74 ammo was as cheap as any center fire round on the market. Hopefully in the near future we will se the Russian surplus start to flood the market again. If so I will pick up an ak74 and several crates of ammo to put away for a rainy day

The triangles take a little getting used to, paracord helps with the Texas heat. I love the folding poly stocks that came with the 107FR and 104FR but if you want to change anything your options are limited, the folding Russian and Bulgarian metal triangle stocks go with any stock choice.
