Got an SVT-40

Just picked up this 1941 Tula refurb from my LGS. They had two...one with a darker finish and no cleaning rod but correct sling, and the one I bought, with the leather sling and cleaning rod. Need to get an original mag + sling shortly. Enjoy:

Whatsinaname, havent shot her yet, sadly :( Itching to go out this weekend and try, at you say, 100M, time permitting...will indeed give a range report once done!
And maybe even a video...

Please do! Nice sticks and nice collection!

You know, there is a full auto version of the SVT called the AVT... that would be worse than shooting an M14 on FA i think, haha. Let us all know how she does.

Thanks from BillyW

if you are not a reloader, consider buying a box or two of Wolf "Gold" 7.62x54R 180 SOFT-POINT (not the FMJ) and see how it shoots. I had a similar rebuild about 10 years ago and accuracy was very good to excellent with decent ammo. A very fun and easy shooting rifle.

Thanks from BillyW

Nice rifle. You will be impressed how comfortable to shoot. Reminds me of a Garrand / M1A except feels lighter and more balanced. Cleaning rods are almost impossible to find - so you made a good choice. Make sure you do a complete tear down after shooting corrosive ammo as gas system will corrode on you. Wear eye protection and go slow when taking rifle down for cleaning. Sling - ebay or https://www.buymilsurp.com/svt40-tok...le-p-3586.html
Mags are expensive $100 plus and hard to come by as they did not make many extra - issued Russian rifleman the rifle and sometimes one extra. PSL mag pouch works nice as a 4 pack mag carrier. You do not have a model with scope rails so don;t worry about that.

Thanks from BillyW

Ok, great to know, will do. All I've got now is a couple thousand rounds of Russian and Romanian x54R surplus...which I will also test. Glad to know I can expect it to be accurate!

Thanks for the tip about the corrosive on the gas system. Will do on the eye protection. I've already had my hand gashed wide open from the damn recoil spring...its kind of a complicated rifle to reassemble compared to other combloc rifles, but amazing fun all the same. Thanks for the sling link; ordering one now! Wasnt sure if they used the same doggie collar style as the Nagant but now I know they dont! I've found a few magazines on gunbroker; http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=322475650

Question for you regarding the gas system. I havent really read up on it but wondering if I should expect/know anything in regards to it? Its currently set on 17, and I think I'd have to get a special tool to adjust it.

Thanks!

Recoil spring is a killer. Here is link to cleaning procedure - http://www.surplusrifle.com/svt40/ri...svt40rifle.pdf Gas setting is probably ok where it is. Reloading - You can get Lapua brass or make your own brass from WIN 284. Wolf Gold for hunting factory ammo or Wolf / S&B for plinking.
