This is a discussion on Hk417 or SCAR 17 and why. within the Foreign forums, part of the Gun Forum category; Simple enough right?
wrong i can't decide.
right now i lean to scar for ergonomics.
what I'm curious to hear is what is better. Some ...
The semiauto version of the HK 417 , the MR 308 was procured as the new DMR rifle G28 for the German Army. We shoot it in our reservists shooting club. With the right ammo and a match triggergroup it is on par with bolt action sniper rifles.
I own a SCAR 17S and hands down I would take it over a 7.62 AR platform. (Even if it was an HK)
I sold my DPMS LR308 because the SCAR is far lighter. (half the weight), The included sights are great, cleaning is a cinch, hardly any recoil and it has a side folding stock.
I have nothing but good things to say about it.
I've shot both, the SCAR is siginificantly lighter, however recoil is more noticeable. They are both great platforms, but from my experience manufacturing browning belt feds, square bolt carriers are far better than round, so expect significantly better reliability with the SCAR. Also availability of accessories is going to make the SCAR a win. We are carrying new SCAR lowers that allow you to use PMAGS (non ffl item by the way). HK has proprietary magazine, and good luck getting spares. SCAR WINS
If you are looking for an AR in 7.62 for a longer range roll, I would seriously look at the LWRC REPR. What gives it an advantage to me over other AR platforms is the side charging handle. http://www.lwrci.com/p-120-repr.aspx
Scar 17 do not even have to think about it! HK has a attitude just like Mercedes does. They think there stuff is the best. Which is just so so to me. They want big money for the stuff. They really could care less on the civilian market. There's is military and police. They want that market! Very dealer unfriendly as the first order has to be $50,000. I will spend my money else were, but you get what you want, as it is your money!
Is the MR762 chrome lined? I know the MR556 model ISN'T! A 2K+ non precision rifle that isn't chrome lined is a no go for me.
Btw my idea of precision is below 1/2" groups at 100 yards.
I thought that a moly barrel or ss is much better than a chrome lined bore for accuracy?
the HK also doesnt have a true monolithic rail it looks like.
I imagine if you take a good fall with your rifle, it will not stay aligned. This isnt a huge deal to me since i dont run forward optics. But i have noticed the free float rails are not too sturdy (with the exception of the vltor)
Is the Hk front rail a 2 piece Or 1 piece free float?
MR 223 barrel is chrome lined so I think the MR 308 is too.
That's not what H&K USA says about their rifles.
"But unlike the HK416, the MR556A1 does not use a chrome-lined barrel. Chrome-lining can sometimes mask bore imperfections and negatively affect accuracy. For the new series of Heckler & Koch semi-automatic MR rifles, HK designers and engineers believe best accuracy comes with an unlined bore."
