Mauser question

Anyone have any idea of some good big bore cartridges that are suitable for the mauser action?

what about just going with 300winmag?

25-06
30-06
270 win.
300 win. mag.

Short cartridges
.308 win.

If you are planning on using the Intermediate length Mauser 98s (Yugos 24/47/48) 243 Win, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 260
Rem. 350 Rem Mag, 7mm-08 and 308
Win. If you are using a standard length Mauser 98s, then almost anything between a 270 Win up to a 458 Win Mag will fit and work.
My recently finished Mauser "Sniper" rifle. A Yugo action in a 308 Win.

My 300 Win Mag on a standard length Mauser98.

My son's 300 Win Mag.

2 376 Steyrs built on standard 98 actions.....soon to be converted to 375 Ruger.

35 Whelen on standard 98 action.

Mauser actions have been made in calibers all the way up to the .500 Jeffery and .505 Gibbs. The .416 Rigby was designed when the Mauser 98 Magnum action came out and Rigby was Mausers sole English agent. There have been tons made in .458 win, .404 Jeffery, .425 Westley Richards, .375H&H, the list goes on forever.

Are you asking what will fit in a standard/military action or just the top end of the boomer scale? What type of game do you have in mind?

I was thinking elk or dangerous game/ long range

thats why i was thinking 300 win mag. but its a yugo24/47

maybe i should just stick with 8mm. it seems ok. I can get sub min accuracy at 100 but i have yet to shoot it out to 4-500 yet to see how that holds up. Thats with nosler partition custom ammo.

Very few factory 8mm loads unleash the full potential of the cartridge. I didn't see 8mm on Nosler's website, so I don't know that weight/muzzle velocity you're shooting. With your own loads the 8mm cartridge should work fine though, if you're willing to do that.

For reference, the Yugo surplus I feed mine is 198gr @ 2430fps, 2596 ft*lbs of energy, according to Prvi Partizan's website. Their data is divided into "8x57 IS", "8x57 IRS", and "8mm Mauser". My ammo is IS, IRS loads are around 2433 ft*lbs, "8mm Mauser" loads are around 2110 ft*lbs or less.

The 24/47 should be able to handle the angrier IS loads (often called JS in the US), I think the "8mm Mauser" loads are weaker because Model 98 actions prior to 1905 were designed for the M/88 cartridge, which is less powerful than the IS.

Sorry if you already knew this :P

The early 8mms (7.9x57) had a smaller bore (.318") and shallower rifling, but it was discovered that those bores/rifling erroded to quickly. So, the rifling was deepened and the bores enlarged to the current .323".
US ammo is downloaded so that load with a larger diameter bullet isn't put in a rifle with a small bore and blow it up. However, during the 1st WW, the Germans could not build rifles fast enough so they took many rifles with the older smaller bores and opened the throats up so the newer ammo could be chambered. Rifles were then issued.

German WW2 ammo was standardised around the 198 gr bullet, rated at 2476 fps from a 23.62" barrel. 2575 fps from a 29.13" barrel. Chamber pressure 46,926 psi.
German WW1 ammo was a 154 gr bullet, rated at 2854 fps from a 23.62" barrel. 2936 fps from a 29.13" barrel. Chamber pressure 44,082 psi.

I would like to build a .416 Taylor on a 1909 Argentine action I have in the safe, The 416 Taylor is basically a 458 Win Mag necked down to .416 caliber.
I have a 300 Win Mag built up on a Brno 98 Mauser but its kind of a freak, it has a 27" 1 1/4" dia heavy barrel, full palm swell laminated stock and a old Redfield 6-18 5 star scope. it is very accurate but it weighs about 19lbs.

[I]f your action has a Bbl. in 8mm/32cal and is still good think about re chambering it to 06 that would 8mm/06 Poor mans Mag. 125 gn too 220 gn and that was back in the seventies. With that multi steped Bbl. done up as a sporter in a streight Monti Carlo stock what a thing of beauty for serious hunting.
