a few FAL questions I have

I few days ago I picked up a dsa sa58 16'' tactical carbine with fluted barrel thru some trading. I really love the feel of the shortened gas system and find it much more ballanced than the 16'' inch ones with full length systems. it has a post ban unthreaded barrel though . I would really like to get it threaded but wonder if its more trouble and money than its worth. how important is a flash surpressor on a 16'' .308? also I ordered some dsa 30 rounders and wonder if anyone has any experience with those.

At that barrel length, you want a muzzle break or combination break. If you really want to get the muzzle threaded try this link

http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com/index.shtml

Marks good to work with and I cant say enough about his customer service.

Sounds like you got an older rifle... The older DSAs are built with far better parts than their current offerings.... The barrel is very EZ to thread, i know several top level FAL armorers PM me if you want their contact info

thats good to know I had no idea that the older sa58's had better parts than the newer ones.I always thought it would be a very time consuming task to thread a barrel and the barrel needed to be removed seting me back 3-4 hundred. Id like to keep cost around 150$ and hopefully less. is that a realistic price range?

Many of the post ban FAL variants had the threaded barrels and flash supressor removed somewhat carelessly (especially by Century Arms) and somewhat willy nilly. Many were not re-crowned and sent out with simplly "chopped" barrels to comply with the federal regs (922r) for "import sporters". There are many reports of accuracy problems until the poor victim of this butchery is at least recrowned or maybe even having a good, new or original flash supressor installed. Make no bones about it...an improperly installed (or even non installed) flash supressor can indeed affect the reasonably expected accuracy of a service grade L1A1/FAL variant.

I would suggest joining the FAL Files Forums and contacting Moses for advice or suggestions on you options. In my experience...real life, actual L1A1/FAL experienced smiths are few and somewhat far between.

Personally...I haven't had any luck with any aftermarket 30 round mags. IMO...they were kept at 20 rounders for so many years worldwide by so many militaries for a reason.
