| AK74 NDS-2 problem solved... kinda
Welp, i posted a while back about my NDS-2 bulgarian AK74 was beginning to keyhole. Did a bit of an inspection on the throat. just from what i can see with a flashlight and looking into the back of the breach... looks like the first 1.5-2 inches of leade are SMOOTHBORE. I can see no rifling at all from the back end.
The "bullet test" sinks all the way to the case mouth too.
Guess thats what i get for inducing a heavy firing schedule on a non chrome lined barrel. 5,000 rounds, but ive run that girl hot and hard.
Shes only keyholing about 1 time out of 10.
Sounds like ive legitimatly burned out this barrel. Does this sound about right?

John- ive been using it like an RPK at times. I def done some rapid (200 rounds per minute+)
Im gonna rebarrel her though with a good chrome lined barrel. BTW- who in their right mind makes an AK without a CL barrel? whats the point?
BTW i slugged the barrel, shes coming in near the muzzle around .218-220 BUT, i felt it give towards the end of the barrel towards the breach before it hit the chamber. you can kinda see where the smoothness rubbed off the rifle marks on my lead slug.

That's sad bro.... US made 5.45 barrels aren't much, when you replace it make sure you use an original Bulgy barrel (i know where several are PM me if you need 1)

Dude, that video was awesome!
Glad you figured out what the issue was - thought the barrels on those were chrome lined :(

Thanks Ham,
Mindfield- i know right? Im using a small handmirrior (actually the one from an old face cammo kit LOL) to really get a good angle on the lands and grooves via the breech.
A side-by-side compairison with another AK is night and day. I have a WASR that is chrome. its rifling is stout and begins where the chamber cut ends.
The Bulgys rifling is nonexistant after the chambercut, with small traces of it as it get farther away. there also appears to be some pitting or something. hard to tell. Its shot though (pun intended).
You know, ive burned through some M240 barrels in my day, never really inspected them though.

man, nice bump firing. i have a SGL20 7.62x39 and the trigger is too stiff to bump fire with. did you have to mod your trigger at all? if i had a lead slinger like that, i would just keep the crappy barrel on it and shoot it till it melted. you using that cheap corrosive ammo?
and i have no experience with a 5.45, but doesnt that round tend to key hole anyway? i dont know.
that vid makes me want to get a '74 now.

Charlene,
Thanks. Its just a tapco G2 trigger, but its actually not bad. Im considering a Red Star Arms as well.
I really enjoy the 5.45x39 round, as its really the only one i can afford to shoot en masse at the moment, especially high volume. I am using cheap russian N76 ammo, but can effectivly engage man-sized targets out to 400M with ease. I can even hit the 600 meter target about 2 out of 5 times.
The round is not target accurate, but does not keyhole. Century put out some bad barrels on some tantals and even some bulgarians i believe some years back (some .224 barrels i think it was) and they were keyholing. When I noticed this rifle was doing that and upon inspection well... see above. I did a range report on my terminal findings (on steel only) with this round some time back. Some of the impacts appear sideways, especially at long range. If it was tumbling in flight, it would never reach its target. No- this round yaws almost immediatly upon impact it would seem. Even more so at longer ranges, due to a lower velocity and the downward trajectory of the bullet. Interesting stuff.
No, even firing like that- a good chrome lined barrel should be able to stand up to that kind of abuse. An AK platform was designed to be an MG/bullet hose first, a rifle second. I am going to replace this barrel because its actually dangerous. I use her like an RPK sometimes at 600+ meters. i KNOW i can put a good cone of fire on my little steel plate at that range. With 6-9 round bursts its fire-wait-impact-repeat. But now, its fire-wait-one-or-two-rounds-impact...WTF? Thats dangerous. Just what i need is a tumbling round boomeranging into a cows eye in the pasture next door, haha.

My Tantal has a "slippery" trigger on it and will dump a mag faster than you can say Sh)t. It's in my pickup with 10 mags to get me home to the arsenal.
