It's easy to criticize gun show prices but seller overhead has to be taken into account. The cost of merchandise, motel rooms, meals, gas/diesel, tables and time away from family all have to be taken into account and it's not realistic to expect an exhibitor to pay for these simply because he enjoys being there. In my experience, any show involving overnight travel and associated expenses typically costs $1,000 or more. Technical knowledge of purchases is crucial but there are thieves on both sides of the table and it only takes one faked item to put an exhibitor squarely in the red for several shows. Trying to compete with wholesalers or the internet is seldom successful, so if one compares prices, the dealer is decidedly at a disadvantage. So, next time you go to a show, be thankful that it's even there for one thing and be glad that there are small exhibitors who are willing to set up for what's usually a break-even proposition, at best. |

I was at our local show most of Saturday.
It's never as black or white as sometimes described by all of us...
I agree there are 'thieves', and Idiots!...on both sides of the tables!
'Bargains' are relative things...If you've been looking and looking for something forever or if you can save Tax and/or S&H or if you can personally inspect it rather than rely on an Internet description or if you want it Now!, That's A Plus! A 'bargain' is often in the eye of the beholder.
Ignore your buddy who says---I used to have a bunch of those and I only paid chump change for them!
Some Dealers Have Good Stuff, Priced 'Fairly', And Do A Lot Of Volume!
Others...Pay the $20-25 Table Fee Here, and It Might As Well Be A 'CHAIR' Fee! But It's Their $, And Clearly They Get Their Moneys Worth Just To Be There...
Anyway...
I DO...Appreciate The Fact That There ARE Gunshows And Gun Dealers And Fellow 'Gun-Nuts' And Vets To Go And B.S. And Hang-out With For A While!
And I will keep on going...
I always learn something, and think of another project, another have-to-have...
This time...I got Lucky!
I was 'gifted' an M4 Flash-hider...
And I bought One G.I. Ammo Can, 40MM, Nice Big Size, Good As New, Fair Price!

Have you noticed the Discount Ammo signs posted in the area?

There used to be a kid that had one table and sold ammo, nothing else at the New Bern Show and his prices were the best I ever saw at these shows around here. He sold everything from .22 LR match ammo to mil-surp 7.62X54mm and everything in between.
Honestly I couldnt tell you about any discount ammo vendors recently.
Was there really anything worth looking at there when you went?

It literally looks like the bore was worn smooth and two grooves were cut into the bore. Anyone know more about this? Was this actually produced or is it shot out?
| Its an ol 2 groove barrel. I have a 1943 Enfield No4 Mk 1 with a 2 groove and it shoots great with 174gr Sierra's

I have a 2 groove with Parker Hale adjustable rear sight, it shoots better than my M1 Garand (which is a very good HRA with almost new barrel).

Was there really anything worth looking at there when you went? | There was a booth selling stripper clips. I grabbed a bunch for my Enfield and MN. Other than that nothing that I could afford.

I went to a little 80 table show on Saturday because it was closer than the 300 table show 90 minutes away. Prices were generally good. I got there late (about an hour past opening) and on the third table by the door was a collector grade 1955 H&R Garand in the condition shipped (unissued). I was quick on the draw and bought gun and original shipping box for about half of CMP price when they had them. Everything is strictly according to Duff and I had an H&R M-1 in boot camp, so there's added nostalgia value. The shipping documents were missing but I'm not one to complain. My other purchase was a new Nikon Prostaff 3X9X50 at an asking price of $100. Some characters were actually trying to beat the dealer down on price so I simply handed him the money. I added a set of Leupold mounts new in the wrap ($10) so the scope is up and running. All in all, time well spent.
Semper Fi and good hunting!

Haven't been to a show in SC in about 20 years, but that's more because I'm not up in that area anymore.
We get some shows around here that I go to to mainly get out of the house and maybe find a bargain or something I'm looking for. The issue I have is most of the dealers automatically assume your an idiot. I don't mind paying a little extra to be able to inspect vs. an internet description, pick it up now, ect., but I am smart enough to have an idea of what I'm interested in is worth. Any for what it's worth, and I haven't done it for a while, I used to set up a booth at gun and knife shows before I got swamped with orders.

I could tell you some stories that would make you scratch your head from working the show in New Bern, Jacksonville and Greenville. SOmethings I saw dealers do to customers would really make you wonder if some of them had constricted air flow in the birthing canal........... |

I was too disgusted over the $39 dollar boxes of Federal and Winchester ammo.
