I found a pristine example of a 1940 manufacture K98k. It is all matching including the serial numbers on the screws.

Got more details and pics? Looks good from a distance.
ETA: From that shiny buttplate, I'm fearing that it's a Mitchell's Mauser.

looks like a yugo rework, is the bolt bright or dark like the other metal on the rifle?

Also mitchells has been known to re serialize part to make them match, id bet it was a Mitchell, but nice eiither way | Why would you say that it was a mitchell's mauser? It has near as I can tell it is the original finish, without the polishing Mitchells does. IT IS NOT IMPORT MARKED. I am not a neophyte when it comes to mauser K98ks, I may have missed something, but I would say it is 100% legit. The reason why it was so inexpensive is the man selling it has cancer and he said he wanted to sell it at a bargin price bargin price because I was in the Army. "looks like a yugo rework, is the bolt bright or dark like the other metal on the rifle?"
Look at links below, polished? I don't think so. http://i478.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/100_1817.jpg http://i478.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/100_1799.jpg

I really just ran into it. Small local gunshow with 40 tables, he had already sold two other ones that were even nicer. He also had a couple others that were 85%, I should have bought them at $375 each, I would been glad to sell them for a small user fee.... . These rifles should be showing up more often with WWII vets getting 85+ yrs old. Keep your eyes peeled some should show up.
Normally a nice original all matching K98k is going to cost upwards of 1200-1500. If it is rare like the serial # 99 - bnz 44 (yup, that's number 99 manufactured by steyer on 1 JAN 44) it could be in the thousands to the right collector.

You do realize that that does not mean that it is the 99th rifle made by Steyr, right? It should have a prefix to the serial. It certainly is sn 99, but since Steyr-Daimler-Puch A.G., Steyr started production in 1939, I sincerely doubt they would only have made 99 by the beginning of 1944. There was actually a short blurb on this in Man at Arms magazine a little while back.
Very nice rifle though.

There might be a bit of confusion, I am talking about a bnz 44 - steyer built rifle not the one depicted in the post above. That rifle was built by Mauser (code 42 (not the serial number) on the receiver in the Oberndorf factory south of Bad Kreuznach.) From how I understand it, the bnz 44 rifle is serial number 99 of the SS contract rifles made by Steyer in 1944. There is no prefix or suffix block alpha code to the serial number. If it had a suffix code I would expect it to be 99a or 99f or something similar. I will include a picture of the rifle in question over the weekend, but it has the large font bnz 44 code on the top of the receiver and has nothing but 99 stamped (plus correct WaA) on all the required parts including the barrel channel of the stock....at least according to my collectors book, and it is the lowest serial number observed. If you know anything else, please let me know.

I see what you are saying.
That's odd though, usualy there would be a prefix or suffix that looks like a lowercase letter. I'll see if I can find that article and scan it.
Edit: You were right, though the Waffenamt marks confuse me. Those were Heer markings, the lack of which helps to denote an SS contract gun. I'd love to see pics!

Nice. I never see them looking like this.
Even if it is a mitchel. It looks good and 425 is less than they want for one isn't it.
I have one that is sporterized and chambered in 270. I love it.
