| FAL or CETME
I have a chance this weekend to get one or the other. I have an M1A, and a .308 AR, but lately I've been getting an itch to get one and with the upcoming GS this weekend both are going to be there. I know a little about both but not really any experience with them. Some of the pros for the CETME:
Mags are running less than a dollar per
Parts are interchangeable with the G3 and it's versions (correct me if this is not the case)
Sights are a little better than the FAL
And there is an abundance of cheap short range practice ammo that can be had, and the part necessary to run it.
The FAL:
Adjustable gas system (big plus in my book)
Abundance of parts
Not really looking to start one of those AR vs M14 type of wars.

I have been thinking about getting a FAL or CETME myself. Either would be great but I would lean towards the CETME.

I'm going to vote CETME. I'm putting together a CETME from a kit this spring as soon as I get all the parts together. It's a tough call though, a lot of guys love their FALs.
FYI, some say you can't reload brass that's been fired out of a fluted chamber like the CETME/HK has. Others say it's fine.

Id go for the fal. forged and threaded is better than stamped and welded in my eyes and the fal is a bit more balanced (to me anyway) than hk91's or cetmes. good luck on your buy.

I have both my Cetme is a Mars import. i would say try to find an H&K 91. The Fal is a fine rifle as well. The Cetne has model specific parts to the bolt and carriers ect. H & k seem more abbundent for parts. I have an M1a as well. I would say If you go Hk, Between the3 its just a matter of choice.

Everyone has a preference, i say fal, it is better made with a machined rcvr. The h&k's and cetme's by design are disposable guns. They were intended for for short duration combat conditions in which the bearer would be killed or captured after no more than three engagements.
Stay away from the cai made junk, have had too many in my shop for repairs. I find the fn and imbel to be of good quality, i said good not great. I have a stg58 on an imbel and it is a good battle rifle.
The cetme triggers are horrible. Yes the mags are cheap. I have seen a lot of the knock off's made on surp kits and they are pretty bad in many cases. If you can get a real one not a clone then i would consider, if not the FAL is a better compromise.
STAY AWAY FROM THE CAI EXTRUDED ALUMINUM RCVR JUNK!!!

I would go with the FAL if it were me. I prefer the fine machine work of the FAL and i just find them more pleasent to shoot than the HK / CETME rifles. The delayed blowback system of the CETME generates quite a bit more felt recoil than a gas operated rifle like the FAL, this is the reason i sold my HK's

I went with a CETME because I already have a really nice gas operated 308. The CETME/HK is a totally different action and I'm an engineering geek. That said, I'll get a FAL someday.

FAL, for all the reasons mentioned above, plus there actually some accessories available for them. Over 90 countries adopted the FAL in one form or another, so it obviously had something going for it.

I've had PTR91s,Cetmes,HK91s and now I have FALs.
I'll never go back.
Adjustable gas for cycling
Ease of cleaning and maintenance
Better balanced for me.
Accuracy on par with any other .308 MBR
Machined, not stamped steel parts.

Just like John said- the FAL has an adjustable gas system on it. I took a class on this weapon system once and let me tell you this- learn how to use that gas system properly and youll be slinging 7.62x51 downrange (even from a carbine FAL) and it will feel like 5.56mm. yes. controlled pairs? hammer drills? notta problem. :D

Had them both. Fal for sure. Easy platform to use with optics too. DSA mount is excellent.
