They are the best of the AK's, I had one in 7.62 NATO. they did not make many of them, this was a model 76 not a 78. I had 3 magazines for it, they were nowhere as good as a M14 mag, the all had dents in the front of the mag from the bullet tips, I traded it for a Springfield M1A-A1 Bushmaster with a folding stock, if you could find mags they were $150.00 each, M78 mags did not fit it. I would love to have one in 5.56 though.

I had one about 10 years ago and it was a sweet rifle. I put the original mags away and used 5.56 Bulgarian AK mags. They only needed a little tweaking to the rear locking lugs to latch correctly.
I'd advise against the Galil mags as from all I read/saw they do not give the bullet the proper geometry to feed into the chamber reliably. The nose can hit the barrel and setback in the case and jam the rifle.
Wound up trading it to my cousin who promptly broke the firing pin and then he found out that there are almost no spare parts for the rifle and a NOS pin cost him $75 IIRC.
Either way they are nice..I just wish parts were more common for them.

Congratulations on your find! Used to have one but foolishly sold it during the 1994 semi-auto ban for three times what I paid for it.

Ive got a Galil in 7.62. In 7.62 I prefer the Galil over the Valet due to the milled receiver instead of the stamped, although it makes for a heavier gun. In 5.56 the lighter weight of the sheet metal receiver may be an advantage. My Galil came with a modified M14 mag, so they can be fit, which is a good thing because the factory Galil mags are $100+. I've always heard that the Valmets and Galils are the highest quality Kalashnikov system weapons out there. I have also heard good things about the Molot Vepr's, but have not had the opportunity to try one. Nice find, good luck with it.

I also had a folder back in the early 80s. Very nice rifle. 12-inch twist, so may not be as accurate with heavy bullets. But an excellent rifle.

What a sweet rifle. I am so proud for you and your pride is more than justified. I'd love to have one in my battery of weapons.
If you're happy with the price you paid then so be it. Inflation will drive up the price through the coming years and it will turn out to be a far better investment than money in the bank. Just don't screw up and get rid of it like so many have done judging by some of the previous responses. :(

You didn't pay too much, you just paid too soon. Tell yourself that repeatedly and the pain goes away very quickly and is replaced with a big smile!!
Nice rifle.

Okay, so how much is too much? Reason I ask, I'm thinking of selling my M-76 folder, .223.
