| Sks rifle
Apparently my national market is being flooded with surplus SKS rifles and they are practically giving them away if you bulk-buy the ammo. My experience with these is limited to taking one in hand and saying "Yeah that's really nice, what a good deal!" So considering them for the first time, who has feedback on these things?

I owned a Yugo SKS for awhile ago and it was a really good gun. It shot without ever having any issues. A lot of people switch out the stocks to make them tactical or whatever they want. There are several different variants but I haven't heard anything bad about them. In my opinion, they are like the Mosin Nagant - inexpensive and a lot of fun. I bought my surplus SKS for $199 and it looked brand new.

Nothing wrong with SKS's. Get one and enjoy.

I bought a Yugo about six years ago for 170 bucks. One of my favorite rifles to shoot. They are a lot of fun and tough as nails.

I've had a Russian (IIRC) SKS for around 12 years and have loved it for plinking etc. It's fun to shoot and relatively cheap to do so.
As said earlier, tough as nails. Mine's been fed almost entirely Wolf Ammo and no issues.
Buy and Enjoy!

out of Yugo and Chinese i can def say Yugo. I also have pretty much fed my Yugo wolf and wolf only and never had a problem that wasn't my fault for swapping parts from one to the other.

It's all good. Yugo SKS's are battle horses, worth the $150 or so. The freaking govt of Mexico ought to be equipping every law-abiding, able-bodied adult citizen of that country with a SKS and plenty of ammo.

Have a Yugo - was my first centerfire rifle, actually, and I love it! I kept mine totally "stock." It'll be a bad situation before my M1A or AR sees steel-cased ammo, but I shoot lots of Wolf in my SKS, no problem.
One thing I didn't realize about it at first, I found out by accident one day - mine has a flip-up "glow-in-the-dark" dot as well as the standard blade sight. And it still works. In contrast, I put some glow-in-the-dark sight paint on one of my pistols not so many years ago, and the "glow" has all but disappeared.

Marstar seems to sell lots of things to the US but of course the ATF prohibits PROC arms from being imported, making Chinese rifles the only firearms-related thing that we Canucks have over US citizens. Take heart though, the version sold here must be sold with a magazine limited to 5 rounds, and what's more the Marstar company is vague as to how they do it. They DO say there is no cutting and welding involved.

My chinese sks is ok. I have the 16 inch "cowboy companion" that was imported by navy arms in the early 90s. I wouldn't say it is accurate and I wouldn't say the trigger is anything close to smooth. Was cheap and shoots cheap ammo. got it for 100 bucks new. After buying the m1a, I find it hard to tolerate such a rifle now. However, it would make a great truck or ranch gun or a rifle for a younger person to get some with at the range. It eats the steel cased ammo well, and like others have said I would have to be between a rock and a hard place before I fed steel cased to my m1a.

I have Russian and a Yugo. The Yugo still has the full set of politically incorrect grenade and bayonet accessories. The Russian is in great shape too. Both are great fun shooting and I would be happy to trust my life to them. Don't expect great accuracy but they are good enough for battlefield use. Like everything else designed and built by Russians, no frills and will keep going through what ever comes.

For the record, my Chinese dream will not happen for now. The seller said they were busy these days and didn't want to have to come to the door (when I'm in their town next week and could pick up in person), said they would ship the ammo and rifle instead (cost: $50+). Well, that's real money to me if not to them, so we are not doing business.
