I've had one for over 30 years. Don't use it because most wood here is pine. You cut a handle for it from a branch or sapling. Using pine it kinda strips out & twists when using it. To carry a premade handle defeats the purpose of carrying it.

Exclamation Lmittef supply

I have access to a limited supply of the pre production skatchetsp
From the inventors home they are made of shock steel and are psrkerized . In August I will be moving back to Florida and one of my first projects will be making a modified skatchet I would love to hear your ideas on the mods you would like. I have been a skatchet fan ever since I saw an ad back in the 70's they were cheap then now they go from $100.00 to $350.00 depending on condition and who made it I have 4 now and am working on getting all the prototypes I can get my hands on. Drop me a note with your ideas.

Lightbulb

I had one for many years. I found it a practical addition to a survival kit I made up from a WWII pilot's vest kit.

Back in the 50s and 60s I flew a lot of single engine missions over rough and remote areas. USAF didn't provide a kit for my aircraft because we had to use seat pack chutes.

I think the threaded hole in the head (to screw in a limb for a handle) would have been better located in the middle between the blade and hammer head.

Do you know of anything like the skatchet available today?

I was cleaning the garage up the other day and found a "Fireman's hatchet" I bought at Harbor Freight a few years ago, I was surprised when I bought it that it was made in Germany by a company called "Helko Tools", the one they have now is a POS made in China...

I wish when I bought it I wish I Had got two, it is very high quality. I found the company on line and they have it listed for $57.00, I think HF had them for $19.99 when I got the one I have. It measures about 19 1/2" long with a 4 1/2" cutting edge.
