M9 Bayonet

I've become interested in one of these. I see the surplus Phrobis III for sale on eBay for $150-200, and the NIB Ontario for $100.

Are the Phrobis IIIs worth it? I can't say that I'd keep it tucked in my safe and I'd hate to 'ruin' a collectors item.

Thanks,

-RD8

IMHO if your looking at an M9 that your going to put to use I'd either go for the Ontario a U.S. issue bayonet or some of the Asian copies are actually pretty well made for even less and make good users from what others have told me. I only collect M9's so I'm looking for the different military contract pieces.

I agree...but as far as that goes...Phrobis,Ontario and Lan Cay are all issue and milspec so as far as use goes , one's as good as another. I have a LanCay M9 and M10 eod knife with all the goodies...I don't have the faintest idea how they wound up in my ready bag after I retired, but both have come in handy!

People have gone nuts collecting, so the Phrobis have evolved into high dollar items.

Here's the problem as I see it both LanCay and Phrobis bayonets can range in value from about a $100 to well over $1000 depending on the variant you have in your hand. To me it would be worth knowing before I started digging up roots with it. In my case all my M9's are safe queens whether they like it or not. But I have other tools. Also I think you still can run across a good mil spec example bayonet for under $100 if your patient and willing to look.

Hated it...Stuck with the M-7. The only thing the M-9 was good for was breaking the metal bands on 4.2 " mortar ammo crates.

What about the Smith and Wesson? I think it sells for around $60. I have a US Issue M9 and I love it but It cost me a Bill.

I dint even want to mention what I paid for my usmc and lazy nine. 100 dollars is a steal.
I did not buy them to use they were added to the collection.

PS sac troop knows his stuff and gave me lots of advice.

I spent 7 years in the Marines having a bayonet issued to me the whole time and it was an M7. Never heard of an M9. Looked up on google and said M9 was adopted in 1984 as primary bayonet. I got out in 2005. I guess it is true, Marines never get the new stuff.

Do you have to have an M9? I really like the newer OKC3S bayonet the U.S.M.C. is issuing:

I have to agree. I have never seen anything wrong with the old M4-M7 design myself.

Sac troop those M9's you counseled me on have gone up in value. The USMC's are selling for 400-450 now. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to drag them out of the safe, might as well look at my investments.

To the op, did you ever buy an M9 for yourself?

Good to hear Warren. I thought things would go that way. A couple of years ago the Marine Corps released the M9's that they had to make room for their own bayonet. Funny they never really ordered the M9's if you will but they needed replacements for their M7's.
I saw it as a temporary en balance in the supply and demand and knew there where a few of the more desirable types in their stock. I'm a little surprised that the prices have recovered this much so soon. But I'm not complaining either.
