I've gone with the multiple knife concept that a few folks put on here...... final purchases:
Full size Ka-Bar
Buck 110
Gerber Diesel tool
Gerber Parang machete
Cold Steel Trench Hawk.
My pack weighs a ton now but I am one happy kid.

More often than not most companies who have a name on something good Guns.Cars Tracto'rs TP or what ever. contract out for the lowest bidder. Some of the cheepest c#$p out there. The only reasion one would be in my kit would be for barter or fishing weights. If there are any good ones out there havent seen one yet.

Mine has a kydex sheath which is not too bulky and can be easily attached to load bearing equipment or belt. They make a D2 steel version as well, which if I didn't already have sentimental value in mine, I would buy (no one needs two knives..... wait, wasn't there a simpsons episode about that?) Anyway, this knife would be a great addition to any survival kit. The rubber handle is awesome (doesn't slip when "wet") and you can attach a lanyard if you want.

HedgeHog is nice ...... but paying more for the sheath than the knife is a little out there.

Hasn't been a chicken or salad that has survived a family picnic in years with this bad boy.

IMO you can't beat a good leatherman/gerber multi-tool. The vast majority of the times that I have seen blades used in a field environment they have been used to cut open food, cut wire or 550 cord, or whittle sticks out of boredom.
The best way to win a knife fight is to arrive with a gun.

I am using 2 S&W knives. A one piece Tanto style and a clip point folder. Prices were very good at Big 5. Both knives seem very solid, and made of stainless steel. As a spare, I have an old WW2 K-Bar.

those knives are cool but everything but solid. I have owned a half dozen or so in my time and they ALL but 1 have broken when dropped. the screws split in half.. easy fix though.
