I like hand forged knives and Damascus blades. Just something about them vs the commercial blades made today.

Love that show have been wanting to learn to make knives for as long as I can remember. The best Damascus blade I saw made was made by forging a billet out of ball bearing, chainsaw chain pieces and powdered metal. That was put into a box made out of steel plate that was melted into the billet except for the steel plate box. It was then cut off and the Damascus billet made into the blade. It was awesome.

I watched that show a lot when I had tv.

I've always enjoyed blacksmithing and making blades. I'd just wish they would not make that show a timed contest so the makers could really spend some time on crafting their blades.

Thanks from arcticdog and O-Neg

"not make that show a timed contest"

Yes, I can't stand those fake contests. Get a life.

I know a custom knife maker here in Georgia that makes a lot of his blades from stainless steel aircraft cable, or some such. He gets scrap from Lockheed Martin in Marietta, or some such.

He says it is a great raw material for making twist Damascus. His knives are gorgeous!

Thanks, O-Neg! I didn't know it was back this season. It's a great show, one of the most interesting on TV! 'Course, I'm a blade freak!

I have seen that called: CABLE DAMASCUS !

I guess it's an 'easy way' of obtaining the multiple, multiple layers desirable in 'real' Damascus steel(as opposed to Faux Damascus by Acid Etching).

My first was a cable Damascus, my brother is a great blade smith, wish he could do that show. He can do a "flame edge Damascus" looks like hot rod flames in chrome on the cutting edge of the blade. One of his ladder bar patten knifes is in my M1 tanker photo album.
