Do I have a Devine?

I have a SA M1A. The barrel is not a Devne marked barrel but the receiver is a SA ser# 18XX. Would it be possible this is a rebarreled Devine? All info appreciated.

Is the receiver serial number 0018XX or 018XXX?

No, Devine Tx M1As were all stamped on the barrel back by the reciever ring under the handguard. PITA... but that's the way they are. Jack and Ilia's stamped their recievers... Devine SA didn't. Genesco Ill does. Been working on them and 14s for 40 years now. Yep had a class III for years until it simply because a PITA.

I thought they were stamped on the exposed part of the barrel.

Thanks from Gman56

The main reason I asked was due to having an early rifle (years ago) that was said to be a Devine rifle, but there were no barrel markings. I later asumed it was built on one of Elmer's receivers, it was glass bedded and had national match parts. But I don't remember ever looking for the markings under the handguard. The rifle is long gone.

Texas era M1A rifles (complete rifles built in Texas by Springfield Armory, Inc. aka L H Gun Co.) were marked with an address on the barrel. The address markings were either hand stamped or engraved with a pantograph. The address markings were sometimes in one line and sometimes in two lines. The address markings were sometimes placed between the front band and the chamber and sometimes they were placed on the exposed part of the barrel between the gas cylinder lock and the front sight. Not all barreled receivers shipped from the factory were stamped with an address marking, e.g., serial numbers 000172 and 000214. I have photographs and/or primary source documents to prove these statements. Note that I don't use the term, "Devine M1A."

Thanks from CAVman

Back in the birth era of the civilian version of the M14 a man named Elmer Balance was the prime mover in building the rifles that we all love. You could say that without Mr. Balance there would be no civilian M14. When he first started building rifles his shop was in Devine TX and those rifles bear a Devine TX or variation of that stamp on the barrels. Hence a Devine M14 (M1A). There's lots more to the story and you can probably find a lot more info in this subforum if you look a bit.

BTW, Welcome!!
