Barrel tension seems to keep these two surfaces in contact on mine, and I can squeeze the handguard and stock together with my hand, creating maybe a 1/16 gap. Is that a correct amount of play?

It's supposed to be, that's right out of the AMTU accurizing manual and every NM rifle I've seen, owned or used was done that way. The NM M1's also are polished there. It makes for smoother operation as the bolt recoils and runs over the polished portion of the hammer and returns.
