i am going out on a limb but i think that M1A should have a Devine address for that serial number range.
i have not seen them all so it might be correct but i find it suspect .

let others chime in and see what they say , there is more knowledge here than what i know of, someone will set you on the correct path.

even with the signature on stock i don't know what Elmers signature looks like. So he might have signed it?

i know i would not have let him sign my stock , maybe a piece of paper yes , but not my stock.

it has a match rear sight, does it have it on front sight ? and is the barrel NM ???

hope you found a jewel . maybe i will learn something too.
good luck
RB

Does the barrel have a Devine address on it?

It comes with an ART, mount, and M2. The front sight is NM also. The bedding in the stock is cream in color.

I'd buy it if the price was reasonable.

Looks like a very nice package. I've never seen a L.H. Gun Co. marking before, so someone else will have to comment on it, but it looks like it has been reparked. Have you talked to Mr. Ballance about it? If it checks out and the price is right, I would pick it up. It's a nice piece of M1A history.

If I remember correctly, only the first 100 rifles were made under the L.H.Gun Co. name. I think your receiver is a Devine Tx era receiver but I would be suspicious of the rest of the rifle. Contact Mr. Ballance to be sure. I'm sure member "Different" can tell you more also.
Here is my L.H.Gun Co. rifle marking for #000067:

edited to add:
Here is my Devine Tx manufactured rifle # 000134 barrel marking

Thanks from Cass, Deacon and budster

I think you should ask Different. I have seen as many or more Devine's than most and own 5 including a low 2 digit and a 3 digit. I have never seen that barrel marking before. Both in it's position nearly on the side or the way it is spelled out. But I have seen the L&H gun company address and it didn't look like that on the one I saw. I also don't like the look of the rear tab of the receiver with the line across it in the metal. The marking on the rear tab looks right for an early gun with the cap fout MM. The Art system and M2 bipod will add to the value. But how much depends on how much the buyer would want it. Lee Emerson, aka Different, would be the most definitive opinion.

I guess I'm gonna pass on getting this rifle. I'm concerned about the barrel marking being on the side of the barrel, and it being much different than other rifles in the same ser# range. I have a pic of Elmer signing the stock with the previous owner, but can't verify the rifle attached to the stock is the same.

Unless Different feels like chiming in, I'm gonna let it go.
