my visit with ELMER BALLANCE in DEVINE,TX.

spent last weekend (well 2.5 hours anyway) with Elmer Ballance in his shop.
brought him some chicken strips w/gravy and us too(my son inlaw) and had lunch there in his work area with a couple of beers to chase it down(he likes beer).

after lunch time we sat and talked a little bit first thing he said let me see my handi work i created 43 years ago!!!,then i brought out the two Devines i have and he/we took them down to verify the address engraving ,by the way he said they never stamped the barrels they were engraved with a machine he still has (will post picture)different engravers depending who was there at the time,by the way he said he was going to have a talk with the guy that did mine , he was suppose to engrave it forward of the gas cylinder where most are, he has seen others engraved where mine is between the GC and op rod LOL. my Devines were visually verbally verified.

He gave us a tour of his shop/machinery/lathes, frikin awesome place.
he had 1911 uppers he is building, full uppers with barrel, firing pin, ejectors, bushings, complete uppers (i ordered one).
also building AR15 uppers with bull barrels,(he called them machine gun barrels) pictures will be posted.full complete uppers just slap them on your lower ready to go.

Stocks stocks stocks he had the stocks ,all kinds from military 22 rifles,garands,carbines,M1A(of course)

he showed us a magazine he had and was going to build a M14 to fit it to.
50BMG and he cracked a big smile.

but one of the most eye opener for me was the amount of M14 bolts he had.
he told me he was sitting on 800 bolts ready to go.plus more sitting on racks and all the drawers he had were full of parts,M14,carbines,garands. op rods galore.

brand new colt 22 ace conversions in boxes&boxes

i did get to hold the 000001 and 000100 ,both are for sale @ 50K for both.
that is what he told me at that time.

i have more pics but had to change over to my Iphone camera and when i learn to transfer them to my PC i will post them too.

so enjoy the pics.by the way the first pic is in the entrance to the his shop, i think? did not ask, he is the 2nd on right bottom row .will ask him when i go back to pickup my 1911 slide.

Great photos, and a great elder statesman of the hobby - you are fortunate to have had the ability to visit him.

more pics

a few more pics

come to the conclusion that the reason for different engraving fonts is there were other people doing the engraving and not just Elmer. that is why there is 2 line addresses & 1 line addresses ,the o missing in the word box and different way of the written engraving fonts

that is my theory and i'm sticking to it, by the way that is the engraving machine in the 2nd photo

Thanks for sharing. On these bolts are they in original condition or recovered drill rifle bolts?

i don't know if they are drill bolt or recovered bolts , what i do know is they are for sale.
i was so over whelmed that i didn't ask for the prices or ask as many questions as the history behind the bolts.

almost bought a AR 15 complete upper in 7.62x39 ,the bull barrels you see on one of the pics. but i turned my thoughts on the 1911 upper .
