Make a Faraday box to protect the electronics.

I don't trust them either which is why I opted for the old reliable Sargeant and Greenleaf dial combination lock. I could just see me locked out of my own gun safe while desperately needing to gain entry.

There are too many variables, so a straight answer is not possible. Nuclear EMP is vastly different from generated EMP as far as frequencies that may damage electronics. It takes a monstrous amount of energy to generate effective EMP which MAY be effective against a limited scenario at close range.

I don't believe the video above, BTW. Nice sci-fi stuff though.

In a practical sense, the only folks who can produce an effective EMP weapon are major governments, then the issue becomes how does that government effectively deliver the weapon? small, tactical nukes won't do it.

So I'd say we have more to worry about with a volcano erupting in downtown NY. :)

These types of problems are arises to many of us. One of the best solutions for these is The Electronic Lock is better than a EMP. is a locking device which operates by means of electric current. These locks are sometimes stand-alone with an electronic control assembly mounted directly to the lock. More often electric locks are connected to an access control system. The advantages of this is it is connected to an access control system includes key control, where keys can be added and removed with out re-keying the lock cylinder, fine access control, where time and place are factors and transaction logging where activity is recorded.

If I'm close enough to a thermonuclear blast to be affected by the EMP, I'm probably not going to be worrying about my gunsafe. I've got one with an electronic keypad, but it comes with a high-security key lock as a backup, in case the batteries go dead, or a fire melts the key pad.

Typical failure of electronic safes are PCB failures and solenoid failures. Just think, they use a $0.75 chinese made solenoid that retracts the bolt, when it fails places you in a lock-out situation.

All these so called "gun safes" that are 12ga-16ga plate steet are just a holesaw away from theft.

I suggest These
Listen to this.... I also work in this field and most "gun safes" are polished up strong boxes....nothing more. Having said that... I have to drill more mechanicals than electronics every year, but I'm sure that's due to the mechanicals being utilized more than the electronic.
