Best SHTF/Self Defense Weapon?

I hope this isn't a loaded question! What do you guy's think is the best rifle for a SHTF/Self Defense weapon? A Springfield Armory M1A, Fulton Armory M14, LRB Arms M14, or 7.62mm Firearms M14? It would be the standard base model. It is not for target competition. The most important thing's would be TOTAL reliability, and low cost. In other words, the cheapest rifle you could bet your life on.
Thank's

I think my life is worth more than the cheapest rifle I could buy.

Any of those you listed would be just fine, after a 1000 round shakedown
firing and inspection.

Can I have a short barreled 12ga shotgun, too?

CA said it best. All are good choices IMO, it depends on what you want to spend.

If you are truly talking a SHTF (combat conditions) M14 style rifle then I would lean towards a forged receiver from LRB.

I have a SAI loaded and it has been rock solid for the last 5 years. But right now my go to rifle in any possible SHTF situation is my M4 clone.

Regards,

+1 I agree totally. Any well made m1a. I personally like a shorty-socom or scout.

for a true long-term survival SHTF?.... a deadly accurate 22 with a LOT of high velocity ammo and a lot of hi-cap magazines

for a "they just dirty-bombed NYC and East NY is headed my way" SHTF scenario? AKM

I've already got that shotgun. And that hi-cap .22!
I bought a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle back when they first came out. I still have it, and it has NEVER malfunctioned once EVER! I'm just not sold on the 5.56 for medium/long range.

A properly built FAL on a contract receiver (Imbel or Argie) using excellent+ to like new Stery, FN, Imbel or Argie parts & a full length C/L barrel headspaced around 1.634 would be my choice........

If i had to go with a M14 i would evaluate the receiver BEFORE i bought it, irregardless of who manufactured the receiver (the LRB i built last week was not the ideal receiver (VERY tight)) for parts i would use excellent+ to like new GI parts & a full length C/L barrel headspaced around 1.634

After my time in the box and Iraq, I will never trust my life to 5.56 ever again. 7.62 gets the job done! PERIOD!!

Well, right off the bat, LRB is out, too expensive as listed in your parameters that you outlined.
Fulton's IMHO have too many issues with dimensions and mettalurgy, they are out.
That leaves SAI and 762mm, cost difference for a forged with lifetime warranty and a cast with life warranty, is $110.00...so I will bet my life on a 762mm forged, and do, everyday.
