Bracken writes well and makes one think. His book Castigo Cay was one of the scariest that I've ever read.

My friends and I (in the big cities of California) are already stocked up on food, ammo, supplies, clothing, and weaponry.
We're ready... are YOU!?!?!!?!?!!
Now that I'm done purchasing "survival stuff", I can finally return to the more entertaining passtime of "chasing tail"... if you know what I mean.

I don't take anything Mr. Bracken says lightly.
To much of it is derived from simple mathmatics and unbiased observation.

I disagree about the flash mobs in that if cell phones are used, then either the government will pull the plug on the cell towers, or the SAV types will knock them down. Yes, you lose intel capability, but so does the "enemy" and without the capability of starting a flash mob, there is little in the way of centralized authority in these groups. A good electronics tech could even disable a cell tower leaving it restorable, but beyond the skills of said flash mob supporters.
Living just across the Mississippi River in Iowa I am on the "I-80" corridor out of
Chicago. Each area will be differnet, but here the bridges would get blocked and flash mob types, in need of food, would be found wandering down pavement. City kids will quickly learn you don't make much progress in standing corn, and you have to stand back up someday if you kneel down in soybeans. They would be shot dead by snipers. Starvation is a very forceful means of asserting control; either you bow to those with food or you die, no third choice will be given.
Since most urban cores have only 4 days of food in reserve, by day 3.5 people will be eating pets, by day 5.5 eating each other. They will attempt to drive out of the urban core toward percieved food producing areas until the one tank of gas is expended, then they start walking and stripping the countryside like human locust. That means Chicagoans get to the Mississippi River and are confronted with road blocks across said river. That means either they flow north into Wisconsin, south into down state Illinois or back south-east toward Indiana. Then the gas runs out and they are walking.
If it is spring or summer any direction will do. If it is late fall or winter they will naturally turn south. Winter (or high summer) could be a more effective deterrent than any number of SAV sniper groups. Midwest winters can be killers if you are caught outside. Without proper skills and equipment several million could simply freeze to death, and remain unknown until the spring thaw. Summer exposure, particularly this drought summer, and walkers die of thirst. It would be a field day for the vultures.
No, not a nice scenario. Go read Lucifer's Hammer if you want to see how people would be herded just like cattle, and eaten like cattle, too.

After A-Day+12, I figured I'm gonna turn into one of J.R.R. Tolkien's Uruk'hai and just hunt me some MAN-FLESH! |
