I have 2 CMI 25 round mags and 1 CMI 20 rounder, carrying 10 mags sounds a bit extreme. Why so many?
As said they break. And you can drop them in a fight and not recover them, loose them, have them taken, and if you get into a fire fight bad enough 3 mags can go fast. Than your going to reload and fight on, not likely?

Even if you don't want to bug out and don't think even the worst to make you will ever happen, it's safer to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
How long will those 3 mags last over time on foot. You going to carry an ammo can?

If you're bugging out in a vehicle you can, but vehicles break too, can get damaged by bullets and run on gas which you can run out of. I'd say most people here have atleast a battle load out of 10 or more mags and a way to carry them at the ready if needed. I like the Maxpedition Active Shooters bags myself these days but have LBE's and vests also.

If bugging out I plan to take my M1A, but I have my AR ready just the same. Max ASB's for both at the ready. 10-20 round M14 mags in the one and 10-30 round Pmags in the other. 1 mag in the rifle besides of course.

You know there is one thing I don't see a lot of people mention in a "government collapsed US in turmoil" situation that I could forsee coming up as a major problem.

China attempting to collect on their debt.

I'd be happy with giving them hawaii and cali to pay off our national debt though it will never happen.

Think about it, we owe them trillions in debt, there is no forseeable way we'll pay them back in the next century, and if the country collapses the military will be tied up in civil projects or emptied by people deserting to take care oftheir families. Give it 6-12 months of chaos and America would be ripe for the picking.

More than enough reason to cache ammo and food stuffs for the long haul.

For those of you with stockpiles in the thousands, I hope you have it hidden really well or have a quick way to destroy it in case you have to clear out in a hurry. That's a lot of ammo that could end up in the wrong hands if you're not there to guard it.

That's what a shovel, VCI bags, and PVC pipe are for :)

25k rounds of ammo does not really take up that much space. Only about 35, 50 cal ammo cans. I don't need to take it all with me. I bought all that ammo to have a shooting stash for life. SHTF is just another excuse to buy more.

Everyone here has their own opinion of enough ammo. Nothing wrong with that. As stated you need plenty of mags. If you get into a firefight you will loose them.
Myself, i am bunkering down for many reasons.
First is i am too old to run off. Second, i have a defendable place in a rural area with a lake in front and a river on one side so water is not a problem, this also helps in the defense of the compound
There is about 60 acers of hardwood around me for my wood stove.
Have a log splitter and all the pioneer tools needed to live in a primitive state including two man saws.
Have enough food for four for about 5 years put away.
250 gal's of gasoline and 500 of diesel.
Have more than enough guns and ammo to defend it all with about 15 other like minded friends with their families.
each person that will come will bring their own supplies to add to the pot, so to speak.
Ammo averages about 3k per gun. With about 18k for the belt gun.
About 20 mags per gun also.
I live about 45 min from two large scum cities, after years of evolving on a plan the conclusion was to stay here.
it would be about 3-6 months before the city trash got out this way, by then all defenses and people would be in place.

All this prepping started when I was 23 years old after surviving some close calls.
One winter i think in 1964 got stuck on I-84 out of Hartford CT in a whiteout, stuck in car with three others for 20 hours, nearly froze to death.
In the blizzard of 1978 the house was covered with 15 feet of snow, no power, little hope and some c-rats, just a small pot belly stove for heat.
Then came two oil embargos. that was the final straw, I was on the PD and saw how people reacted, told myself I would never be caught empty handed again on anything.

Thanks from Butzbach and bigkicks

SOCOM42, remind me to get on your good side. You guys need any Scouts with EMS experience, and construction experience? May be living in Mass in a year or two. Haha

Good Post, you need a balance between protection and water and food, and the ability to prepare it.

When people I know ask me about ammo I recommed the following, per person.

1000 rounds for your primary handgun.
200 rounds for you little backup if you carry one.
2000 rounds for your PDR [Personal Defense Rifle].

Have at least 15 magazines or speed loaders for your primary handgun.
Have at least 30 magazines for your primary rifle.

Then if you can afford to stock pile more ammo after you have laid in at least 30days to 3 months of food, do so.

I keep 4k rifle rounds and 700 pistol rounds on-hand at all times. Furthermore, I have 300 rounds (plus enough primers and blackpowder to support all 300 rounds).

As far as water goes... I'll be okay for about 10 days or so then I'll have to find a new water supply.

Just an idea to throw into this discussion.....
As we all consider how much ammo I think we should also consider that some mags about rule out prone firing. Thus, be sure some of those AR mags are 20 rounders so you can prone out and keep on target.
It's also nice in the dark to know the short ones have one load and the long ones another so if things might go better with FMJ you can try one and if rapid expanders/match grade are called for then pick the other length.

The initial numbers are to cover primary long guns for myself and the wife, plus ammo for our pistols. May add 12ga to the lineup at some point to add the ability to hunt birds and small game on the trail but as of now not counting on it.

I've looked into the bugout situation from there a fair bit, and figure that besides the roads and common areas which would need to be sidetracked, the Appalachian Trail isn't all that bad an option for working my way north.

The larger numbers are for when we're back home in PA, as we have more intent to maintain a static position since we have the land to sustain on, and more people to bring into the fold to patrol our rural community as the city starts to empty out with refugees.

Though I agree more is better, I'm just looking at minimal numbers for sustainability. Once I have more financial leeway in the next few years with which to stockpile our needs then numbers will increase.
Have you ever been to Africa? People traveling on foot in WROL places don't get far, even if they bring the family AK. I suppose you may have to hit the road in some situations, but that is a last resort for me. Bug in, and if you are really worried about the economics of ammo, reload your own.

I only buy ammo when I feel like going to the range for a little target practice. Only have a target rifle and a hunting rifle. The gubment will shield us from economic disaster and hardship. Not to mention keeping us safe from evil human crud .

I have a family... and well a 2yr old and a baby due in oct... so ill just hang around my house and grow/hunt food. Because if i did have to leave itd suck. Now with that said, i dont have a huge stash, but enough for defense not too mention i have hunters and friends around me who also have guns and ammo. With that said this is what i got.
500 rds .308
1500 rds 5.56
200 rds .45 (because ill only be using pistol as a back up not primary)
50 rds of 12ga buck with 25 slugs
But then i have my hunting guns, 7mm mag and 7mm rem and long barrel 12ga
for those I have 30 rds ammo for the 7mm mag and 7mm, but i also have reloading dies, powder and couple boxes of 7mm bullets. Then i got some birdshot for the 12ga. I have enough to hunt and kill deer for a long time whichll provide, not too mention fishing in the pond which will provide also. Oh yea forgot i do have around 2,000 rds of .22lr!! haha watch out squirrels and rabbits! BUt honestly I live out in the woods, and my town is small so i think we'd stick together. And if not if you attack my house ill be out in the treeline taking shots at you... and i dont miss. And everyone talks about ammo as currency which i do believe, but i also think more people will want to trade for food. So if i shoot an extra deer i bet i could trade it for whatever i needed. But with all that said, i dont see SHTF any time soon. And i dont live in a natural diaster area...
