| Emergency conditions and pets
I have 3 Great Danes that guard my property. I also have stocked about 45 days of food, etc for emergency conditions. But, my food rations do not include my dogs.
What have others done to perpare for your pets?
These dogs are my first line of defense. They are not attack dogs, but they raise the hue and cry.

If you plan to keep the dogs, you need to get food for them, they have to eat, too. They WILL eat to survive. Btw, how much food do you go thru /week with them?

Whatever you feed them, if its kibble, just start stocking up on it & storing in like a rubbermaid tote. Date each bag. Then you can rotate the kibble. And make sure you have the water for them them also.

I have quite a bit of food stashed for my dogs, but when that runs out they will have to eat people food. If they don't like it, I guess they die. I'm betting they will like it.

Might be better to get some new pets...
Like chickens, pigs and cows...
I have thought about that, since I have cats, llamas, and burros myself. |

That is a great idea to contract as private security in an emergency. A lot of good people don't even own a gun and they're going to be scared.

Right away I was reminded of Katrina, where unprepared people alllegedly died rather than abandon their pets. But a dog or three could be an asset, obviously.
I'm between dogs at the moment, valuable though they are in so many ways. With prepping in mind, and also my sanity , I favour the idea of keeping just one of moderate size and of a temprament that would allow it to forage on its own for extra calories, in moderately bad times. People have always had dogs since there were dogs, and clearly it worked out somehow. Having the three danes as per the OP, I would of course strive mightily to keep them all no matter how bad things got, and they would definately be valuable in such a situation, but there might arrive a point where they were either killed for food by the teeming masses or where all three just couldn't be fed....

In the wild, dogs hunt twice a day. That is why feeding them twice a day is ideal. But come a disaster, I will immediately cut down on their food. I believe alittle hungry will help bring out their prey drive.

Yea, I haven't thought about my pets in an emergency. I'm much more worried about a Katrina type disaster than the SHTF type disaster. but after some reading, I was curious how others have prepared for their pets.
These girls eat about 80 lbs of dried dog food a week when active, less in the winter. And storing massive amounts of this food is problematic. Its big. I'm going to have to have some reserve put away.

When the liberal politicians become too worn down, weak, and tired, to continue to work with the other farm animals, they will be slow roasted, mixed with rice, and rationed to the dogs. Seems like the obvious solution for all involved. But I guess it depends on what type of SHTF scenario occurs. If I don't have time to capture those offending politicians, my dogs will also be getting cut rations of dog chow until it runs out, and then move on to people food and whatever critters they catch. There is plenty of people food that is good for dogs, when compared to a lot of dog food. Makes more sense to stock up on something me and the dog both like, rather than something only he likes. Some dog food storage is good, but I lean heavier on stuff for the both of us.
