NatGeo Documentary: Electronic Armageddon (About EMP)

This is a fantastic documentary on EMP from NatGeo. They take a look at the manmade and solar possibilities and the science behind it. Then they take a look at the social consequences and how it would cripple the US. Check it out:

I'm sure everything that is important has been shielded against EMP since the Cold War.

You're quite wrong. Nothing in our civilian infrastructure is shielded. The entire grid would collapse if we had no notice. Military equipment is mostly shielded, but not everything. It is a very real danger, so watch this show and listen to the argument put forth.

not really. how important is your vehicle, and all your electronics. not to mention most mass media broadcast/comunication networks.

Your car, ipod, and the media are the least of your concern. Do you grow your own food? Do you have a self-contained waste system so you're not dependent on the city? Where do you think the food comes from that appears on the shelf? How do you think your water is pumped to your home? People are so dependent on the electric grid and the trucks that deliver food, that people who take all of this for granted and don't realize how fragile it all is will be fighting and killing each other for food. Without sewage treatment, disease breaks out. Without electricity, communications are out. You can't get money out of your bank account. Without millions of trucks traveling thousands of miles, you have no food. It's much bigger than ipods and laptops.

Greetings,

Thanks for the link Vandal; I'll check it out when I have a bit more time.

Yes, the BIG problem is the national power grid. It's not too far off from being held together with duct tape and tye wraps right now! I'd posted this link quite some time ago, perhaps you'd all be interested in it. It's the congressional testimony regarding the EMP threat. A bunch of VERY smart guys from the national labs give their conclusions. I'd tend to put most of my grains of salt into what they have to say.

I think it funny they would do this. Didn't their "expert" on Doomsday Preppers say there was a 0.001% chance of this happening?

HH

We'll find out when two or three large air bursts occur over the United States.

no, more like 0.000001%

If it happens, it happens. When it does, you got what you got.

I for one, do not want it to happen. I enjoy my electronic devices which make lazy living comfortable.

If we attacked Iran and it escalated, I could see them or N Korea lobbing a short range missile from a boat off the coast. EMP is far more devastating than a nuke in one city. Millions would die from lack of food and water, police and national guard would either be overrun or would not show up, as they would want to protect their families. It's the ultimate asymmetrical trump card. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Nuke on a N Korean or Iranian satellite just waiting for the right time. If it detonates above the atmosphere, you can't trace it. Scary.

Why do you think fiber optics were so rapidly deployed? It is immune to EMP. And why do you think the phone companies want everyone on cell phones? To free up land lines that are mostly fiber optic for "secure" information transfer that you pay a lot more to use!

Will have to watch the video because man-made EMP is difficult to do over a large area (say bigger than your yard).

EMP is worse than a nuke? Huh??? You can still walk after an EMP, and 6 months later you aren't dying from a compromised immune system overrun by average daily bacteria. Where do you get your info from?

I read a book once titles, NO PLACE TO HIDE. It was written early in the test periods of our nuclear programs. I think what Vandal refers to is the contamination and immediate area destruction caused by a nuke. Problem with the contamination would be to the areas it spread over. The contaminated area would be unoccupiable for quite a long time.

EMP would cover a much greater area and though the damage would be less noticeable over the short term, in the long term it would be much more devastating. That is until we have built the infrastructure to protect against EMP. I personally would prefer EMP to a nuke.

Then I have to wonder what safeguards we have to protect our nuclear powered generating stations from EMP. Tsunami / earthquake not withstanding, what safe guards would be rendered inoperable.

I'm here to learn.

Dose anyone know what happened David Dsarti after the filming of this show? Its pretty shocking really yet sad too.I used to do blogtv with him, He is a silly guy yes, informative too. one time he was talking about choking his chickens, pun intended and I guess ASPSA or w/e thought he was actually chocking his chickens in front of the world in real time so somehow they sent the police at 2am. to pay him a visit. It was something to see unfold. Still cant figure how a viewer traced his IP, called the police, and sent a leo out to confront him.

And the second link is the result of going public? Its codded odd so your gona have to click on it.
