strategic;

What about a strategic strike. Pop one up over a major city or two. Like a jab before the knockout punch. I recall reading somewhere, and haven't found it again, that such a strike was considered during the first Gulf war over Iraq.

Found one link; http://www.rense.com/general34/micro.htm

(excerpt) WASHINGTON (Reuters) - It substitutes pure energy for munitions. It is designed to achieve military objectives without killing people or wrecking buildings.

And Saddam Hussein's armed forces may be chosen as the first target of the U.S. military's new secret weapon.

The U.S. Air Force is developing a high-power microwave, or HPM, weapon that generates a massive electromagnetic pulse capable of frying the insides of digital electronic systems, disabling enemy military equipment, analysts said.

While the weapon is top-secret and details about it are classified, analysts said its development is far enough along that they expect the U.S. military to use an HPM weapon for the first time in the possible war with Iraq.

"The virtue of high-power microwave weapons is that they can shut down virtually any military electronics system while producing no causalities and minimal physical damage," said military analyst Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute think tank. "There's always the possibility that you'll get the scant general with a pacemaker."

These weapons could be used to disable enemy command and control centers, communications facilities, air defense radars, chemical or biological weapons storage or production sites, and sophisticated vehicles, missiles and aircraft, analysts said.

"What that means is that the enemy can't see you coming, they can't hear themselves talking and they can't find their friendly forces. They are essentially deaf, dumb and blind. But they're alive," Thompson added

The intense gamma rays are probably more deadly than anything else.

The EMP threat is, IMO, overstated. Note that those chips were fried OUTSIDE their normal container.

Greetings,

Hi Vandal! Thanks for the additional info and thought.

I've read similar reports. Something to keep in mind is that high efficiency (re fissionable material), enhanced gamma production, low yield nukes are an extremely advanced technology. It's not like Al-Quida is going to fab one up in a cave or garage or swipe one from somewhere and then figure out how to interface it to a launch vehicle. The entire process from start to finish is hugely complex.

The launch of every space payload is monitored and known in regard to origin. If your scenario would take place, we would know who launched it and when, regardless of when an actual detonation would take place. I can't see Russia, China or any other country risking our retaliation by facilitating such an attack.

I do realize there are differing opinions and certainly respect yours. Perhaps we may agree to disagree? Wishing us all an EMP free future!

Regards, Jim

The "experts" are all over the place on this, ranging from 10kt to 10 mt yields, different altitudes, and different delivery capabilities. Most of our enemies have the capabilities to launch satellites in space (or have a sponsor like Russia, who does not audit what is in that satellite), many under 1000km, and these smaller yield weapons don't require much fissile material. So, launch satellites with weapons and wait until the time is right. Now I'm not painting a scenario that I necessarily believe is happening, but I am just demonstrating that the picture is unknown and that anything can happen. We just don't know. And although most Americans are unaware of what EMP is, our enemies sure as hell know what it is.

Don't be so unsure of something you don't know.

Where are all of the Russian nuclear scientists that have disappeared since the end of the Cold War and the ensuing Russian depression of the 1990s? Plenty of fissile material is completely unaccounted for and regularly finds its way through smuggling routes worldwide, especially through the Caucasus. I'm not trying to overhype, but I would rather be safe and take precautions than be caught with our pants down. There is so much that occurs in the world in terms of this stuff, but you will never see it on FoxNews or MSNBC or whatever mainstream media most people consult. What if Russian nuclear scientists have helped N Korea or Iran build a "failsafe" weapons for retaliation? It is not difficult to launch a crude rocket to 200km and both regimes have the capacity, as long as it is launched offshore from the US. The way you confront an overwhelming power is to cripple it from within. These regimes, and Russia and China no doubt know this and will exploit it if tensions rise. The Middle East will escalate into war, our financial contraction will mean we will have to reduce our presence abroad, and Taiwan, the Koreas, and perhaps even the old Soviet states will erupt into potential conflict. Everything is on the table, and we shouldn't be so used to our daily lives that we can't imagine the fabric of society breaking down. We are fragile, the world is becoming more volatile, and I am not discounting anything...
