If you were starving & there were 2,000 other people in your group all vying for the supplies you do have I would think you would split off for your own survival. Nobody is going to be as organized as this though. Bands of people might number in the 20s to 30s, not the hundreds or thousands. Unless it was what was left of a military unit or something. But how many of you guys in the military would turn to raiding & hurting civilians? I would like to think not too many when during this situation you are supposed to be maintaining law & order in the urban environment. I can't believe the rest of you country folk have such little faith in your communities. Out here in the country people would band together to handle any outside threats & provide for our community. Sure there will be some scumbags, but they will be taken care of properly. That is how I see it happening. If I were in LA or NYC or some huge population center it could certainly be different, but in my nook of the country-side it would work out for us just fine.
Not overnight, but that trickle in the thousands easily. There would be common paths of travel along highways, and towns along those highways will get tons of refugees. What is the average amount of food families have in their homes? 3 days. Cities also have an average of 3 days of food. Not overnight, but soon. You really think a small group of armed people at a checkpoint are going to stop thousands of people? Think again. Desperation makes people do the worst things imaginable, especially when it comes to survival. Those bands of 20 or 30 will overwhelm your house, your neighbor's house, or even an entire neighborhood where people are not organized. I hope it doesn't happen. I hope that if it did that people would help each other and organize. Unfortunately, if people are willing to jump out windows when the stock markets dump all of their money, then I don't have faith in the masses. Sure some communities will work together. On a grand scheme, expect lawlessness, riots, crime. I live an hour north of Atlanta, so hundreds of thousands out of a population of 6 million heading north is a conservative estimate. When the trucks stop bringing people's Pop Tarts and neatly prepackaged ground beef, that's it.

Before the next growing season starts, go to your local barber/beauty shops and get their hair clippings for a few days. Then get some pantyhose to make bags from and hang the bags of hair on the fence strands. Replace/renew the bags about 2-3 months and you shouldn't have anymore problems with the deer entering your garden. Old farmer down here told me about this trick and it works! Had very little deer damage and seemed to hold down rabbits as well. Now if I could find something that would work on the bugs!

I have been wanting to start some raised bed gardens this year, am going to buy the book called square foot gardening.

I have no high hopes about what we will yield, but it's worth a shot. I would like to do some tomatoes, onions and other greens but literally have no idea how to get started. We do have rabbits that nest locally which I'm worried about, but my mini-schnauzer usually kills them (and leaves them on the back door step). For a little dog she is very efficient at getting rodents, which is great. We will see.

Imagine the mass chaos of Manhattan Island. 3 days of food in that city and then flocks of refugees crossing over into Jersey looking for food and water. Insanity.

I live in a blue collar neighborhood. Plenty of trades and contractors. Many of us have lots of guns and supplies, more than a rifle for able bodied shooter. We organize some nice BBQ's and what not, friendly. I imagine we would just band up and take care of the problems, security. We have a grassy park with enough land to grow an excess of food. We have seeds and tools. We have water too. No man is an army.

Rabbits; Rabbits are realtively easy to raise. We have rabbits though we don't really breed them for food. They are currently considered pets for the grandkids. We, my wife and kids, used to raise them and sell them to people to eat. It was a 4H thing. A small area can raise quite a few rabbits, they eat little actually, but what they eat is easlily raised if need be. They produce great fertilizer. In fact you have to cut the manure, so it works great in compost. And, hey, they breed like rabbits.

We had a flood one July and had to rescue the rabbits from their pens, via a canoe. The only place to put them at the time was in the garage. A few weeks later we had rabbits coming out of our ears. That evening we lost regulation that night in an orgy of rabbits.
