A thought would be find some river cane (reeds) to use for hanging the tobacco. Easy enough to make a variety of pointed spear points out of different diameter round stock to just insert into the ends of the river cane.

Got my seeds in today. Very minimum I have enough for the next two years. More like 4 or 5 years.
I think I'm two coffee containers short of my 50 mark but that won't be a problem. More then enough potting soil for all the coffee containers. So now its just a matter of the right time to start the seeds.

Took alittle less then two bags of potting soil to fill the coffee containers. Left over potting soil I added to some of the 5gal buckets.

I infact now have five varieties to plant. I will definately need a shedder come harvest time.

I am one coffee container short of the 50 mark but should end up with atleast one. And might get one or two from my neighbor.

Now buckets & potting soil for them is another matter. But those are needed 4-6 weeks after starting the seeds in the coffee containers. So plenty of time to take care of that. I have a 50 mark for the buckets also. Need about 11 buckets & about 5 bags of soil for that. But also at that time will need another two bags of soil to start another batch of seeds in the coffee containers.

After the first plants are transplanted from the coffee containers to the 5gal buckets new soil & seeds will go into the coffee containers. Last year I grew some in the coffee containers for full duration. Some got almost 3ft though all were stunted. Still smokeable tobacco though. And never know when might come upon some buckets at a good price.

But figuring 50 plants in buckets & another 50 in coffee containers that is 100 plants. And sometimes last year I ended up with three good plants in a single container. So expecting a really good harvest this year depending on weather. Plus a good combination of cured tobacco.

Here's something I experimented with late last season. Seemed to work fine. Hang a plant off each side for drying.

With a growing season of the longest of 165 days & most being less, I figure early Sept harvesting the first plants at the lastest & some as early as July. Oct at the latest the second batch of plants should be ready for harvest. No matter what, all will be hanging by 1NOV though. But out of the first batch I will select one plant from each variety to budd & seed.

And this year I will have a shredder come harvest time. I still have two pounds of last year's crop which gets mixed with pipe tobacco.

With the Good Stuff now $14.99/lb that motivates me even more to get plenty of tobacco grown, harvested, processed, & cured.

The way it's done down here (drying) is to run some galvanized wire every 12 to 18 inches along the underside of your exposed ceiling joist. Use something like clotheline wire. Then after you cut the mature plant just drive a nail in on an angle near the cut. Hang it on the wire. Use a short piece (8 inches) of an old ax handle or other hard wood as your hammer.

I think the drying is done alittle different in La due to high humidity most of the year.

With the bnb price increases & having to order $200 to get free shipping, this is another option for tobacco to RYO.

$2/lb cheaper & only have to order $100 to get free shipping.
