portable battery charger

I have one of these on order:
http://ecobatteries.net/Solar-Powerd...B001IMHFX4.htm
And have already received 8 AA & 8 AAA batteries.

For some, it may be the answer to flashlights, radios, etc come SHTF.

It will be interesting to see how you like it. With those specs, it will take about 2 days to charge ONE 2000mah Eneloop AA LSD battery. I also think the plastic case will quickly deteriorate in the sun. A better solution is this:

http://www.amazon.com/PowerFilm-USB-...9528601&sr=8-3

It will charge 4 of those batteries in ONE day. I have several of these in both Texas and in Thailand and they work very well and are extremely reliable. They fold up to fit in a big shirt pocket and are quite light. They have indicator to show when they are charging and when they are fully charged.

Let us know the results you get.

Although not the same particular model, I have one of the plastic box types purchased afew years ago. As the reviewers and Paul states above, they take forever to charge two AA batteries. Constantly have track the sun to get any type of charge. The plastic box is not very rugged, and will not take much abuse. Hawk, spend the money on a good film type foldable charging system. There are military grades availlable on the web. Depends on what you are looking for. dozier

Had to start somewhere & for $24 figure I couldn't go wrong. But the Sanyo batteries is what I really want to get a feel for. Once charged, how long will they last.

Also, I figure I will need a second charger later using one for AA batteries & one for AAA.

Paul, if I'm reading correctly, the one you linked to only does AA batteries. I saw no mention of AAA batteries.

I would be interested in specifics?

I looked at Brunton for quite a while...
Cabelas' sells them.
But The Reviews Were Not Good!

I read the reviews on the 'Power Film' Paul discussed...still problems.

And the "Goal" series...same thing...

I keep trying to talk myself into one, only to eventually decide to wait for a 'better' one !?

WAIT means when a disaster happens you won't have anything. Using a standard charger to keep your rechargeable batteries topped off & come a disater ANY solar charger would be helpful. JMO

CAVman punch up a yahoo/google search for Portable military solar panels. All sorts of things in many price ranges. I believe that Sunlinq is the original military system mfg. for solar panels. You will find that the civvy equivalent models are cheaper than the mil-spec models. If you are looking for permanent panels for your BOL, look at Hawks recent posts on a cheap/reliable set up. dozier

Nice link CAVman. I am using the mil. spec powerfilm products. I have the AA/AAA fold up charger. It has worked well for me. I am putting together a larger portable system with three 30 watt mil.spec fold ups and the power pack in your link. my truck has a dual battery set up as well and at some point I will get a 12 volt fridge/freezer. the ARB unit looks nice but am still researching this. the eneloop batteries are the ones to get! HuntingHawk thanks for starting all these solar threads great info!

If you think about it, that is more then I paid for one of the 90watt solar panels. But that is the difference between permanent or portable. And at that price, you still aren't set up to charge AA or AAA batteries.

Ya gotta do your research.

daniel43, it would help everyone if you would post some pics of your setup.

BTW, I have an extra rechargeable flashlight unit but gets charged from my 380watt system. Its an 18VDC Dewalt drill set with 18V worklight.

Paul may be more accurate on this, but I think four charges of AA or AAA batteries will pay for the difference in price between them & regular batteries.
