I'll be trying more rocks, but first we have to lose about 5 feet of snow and ice in my locale before I can find any- looks like that will be in April or so.

Wish I'd kept more old files when the original Sweets homestead was sold... they were all mixed in with the rusty Model T Ford repair tools and such-like stuff.

Returning to Fire Pistons

Just for grins, I thought I'd throw together a little webpage detailing some of my experiments with fire pistons. It might save someone a bit of time if they are walking a similar path.

Here's the link: Susti's Fire Pistons

Fritos make good fire starters, they are easy to light and burn hot enough to start kindling. For pack food they have a good energy/weight ratio. The large ones hold up relatively well in a pack and the salt is good for electrolyte replacement if your busting a sweat. They also can be mashed up to add some texture to smack ramen or dehydrated food.

Just to let you know
Harbor Freight has magnesium fire starters on sale right now for $2.00 each, I know most every thing they have is cheap but some times you find a jewel in the rough...

I picked up a couple today, they are not to bad but throw away the scraper that come with it and replace it with a peice of good quality hack saw blade or what ever you use, and what ever they glue the "flint" [or what ever it is]
is coating the surface so you have to scrape through it to get a good spark.
