| Vote for best sniping round?
Does not have to be one that has actually been adopted by any military organization. Just your opinion on what your choice would be in a bolt action and one you have actually shot at long range, say 800-1000 yards.
Also, lets keep this realistic. Im not talking about shooting the moon, or taking out a concrete wall, or special purpose rounds, like Raufoss rounds. I'm talking about a realistic all around sniping round to say a 1000 or so yards. And to help keep it realistic, the caliber must be between .224 and .30. You get two choices, a first and second....
My vote:
1) 6.5x08 (aka 260 Remington) - Lapua 6.5 mm 144 gr. FMJ BT @ 2800
2) 284 Winchester - Sierra 7mm 175 gr. HPBT MatchKing @ 2750
-Boy its hard for me to pick a first and second and place them in order!!!

| .300 saum
Mine's in a Remington 700 VSSF tuned up by Shawn Carlock at Defensive Edge.
178 gr AMAX @ 2850 fps is a nice load. This load is easy to shoot, bucks the wind and hits hard to 1000yds.
Doesn't cost much more to shoot than a .308
Best bragging group so far, 1.5" @ 500 yds.

Let's see...Real life? Like MY real life.
.270 Win in a Rem 700 BDL with Hornady 140 BTs, or my handloads with 150gr Berger BTHPs. Both on hand, proven, and available. Recorded and witnessed kills on warm blooded critters to 600m...
And my "I aint got one but if I did" choice
Remy 700 SS 5r in 308 topped with a Leupy M4LR/T. I would load out with 155gr Scenar, and have a second set of dope for 175gr Berger at 2550-2600. The 155 has been a good round for me. The 700 SS5r has a 11.25" twist, I reckon it'll play with the 175s.
I have a Remy 700c in 6.5x55 that's scary accurate as far as you want to shoot it, but you said 2 choices so... |

Surprised nobody has said 30-06. I know it is a very old caliber but I feel very relevent. Or 300 Win Mag. Not my two picks, just suggestions.
My two picks would be:
.308 WIN with 178 A-Max pills, it's cheap and it works.
My second choice is a dream choice,
7.82 Lazzeroni ******* (.308)
Now, I know it is a rare and expensive caliber, but it's ballistics at 1000 yards are very good. A 168gr. Matchking leaving the muzzle at 3500 fps is still going approx. 1800 fps at 1000, and packs 1200 Ft/Lbs energy. The bullet drop with a 300 yard zero is around 168 inches.
The big downside to this caliber is price. $100 bucks for 20 is way out of reach for me. But it is a nice thought.

7mm Remington Sendero magnum with 162 AMax at 3100 feet/sec. This round has more velocity and energy at 1000 yards than the best 308 can put out at 600. And wind, this bullet is immune to it!

I will keep my choice's simple and and cost effective and will limit my max range to 600 yds., for putting meat on the table and out to 900 yds. for "SHTF" sniper type work. First choice is 7.62 x 51 NATO / 308 Win. with my reloads in either the Remington 5R rifle or LRB M25. Picture's attached are of targets the Remington 5R fired, three cold barrel shot using Mil Surplus XM80 @ 100 yds. & my reloads that duplicate M118LR @ 565 yds., another target is the LRB M25 three cold barrel shots with my reloaded hunting rounds,165 gr. Sierra SBT @ 565 yds., all three rounds work very well in either rifle. Second choice is 30-06, again to keep it simple and easier to keep my rifles from becoming a club for the lack of ammo. The 30-06 in the right rifle can do any thing that the 308 Win. can do!

#1: .260 Remington, built on a long action so I can use those L-O-N-G, cruise-missile high BC bullets.
#2: .300 Winchester, built a bit heavier than the .260 to reduce recoil a bit. With those two and good optics, you could 'own' virtually everything out to 1,500 yards. Something like the Army's new XM2010 rifle would be nice. XM2010 SWS |

For me that would be a 168 SMK or a 168 Nosler CC from my Savage 10

OK Mr Glasgow I'll do it for you.
30-06 load depends on the rifles preferences, but with 104 years of loading data,we'll figure it out.
.308/7.62,cant go wrong with either

As much as I'm a die-hard fan of the U.S. milsurps and the .30-06 and 7.62/.308 cartridges, if you're talking about an issue delivery device and issue ammo, there's no topping the Swiss 7.5 and the Swede 6.5 for arriving at POA.
