My '94 Remington 700 in 338win mag using winchester 225gr bullets/ new over the counter ammo. I like it but the bears don't. Its a perfect sniper round too many law inforcement departments are using it and the english soldiers are using the 338 lapua. There not the ame in performance but there a 338cal anyhoo.
My second choice would be my 1972 Western Auto Revelation (made by mossberg) bolt action 30-06 that cost me $172 in '72 and it even came with a scope/mounts. Using my '06 reloads the speer 180gr / IMR 4350 powder / magnum primers at 100yds even to this day she can shoot nickle sized groups at 100yds benchrested. These older mossbergs came in all calibers too i should of purchased another one back then in a bigger caliber too. That $172 price tag kills me to today i got the most bang for my dollar without knowing it at the time.
Both scopes on the 338wm/30-06 has the BDC/AO, its the bullet drop compisation and the adjustable objective out to 500yds they can shoot with no hold over. These have the turrets with the yardage numbers I just dial in the distance and she is good to go. They came with different yardage rings for the different bullet weights. These scopes are awesome and only a few have this feature today.
I was also torn between my 1907 Carl Gustaf M96 (29'' barrel) 6,5mm swedish mauser instead of the '06 but i had to give the under dog mossberg its moment to shine after all it cost me a lot of money back then. Using the orginal iron sights she can print 1 1/2'' groups @ 100yds benchrested using new sellier & bellot 131gr sp ammo if its a good day and i do my part. I was shooting near some SWAT guys who were practicing and one of them walked over to ask me what was i shootin that was so accurate with no scope at 100yds. When i told him it was a 100yo swede mauser his jaw dropped. He told me that had a few SWAT scoped rifles that couldn't shoot groups that good. They stared at my rifle the whole time after that.
One point is its finding the sweet spot for the bullet weight too. Each caliber and rifles does vary. Snipering and hunting is all about making that first shot placed on the money. You can be as good as you want to be if you practice, practice and more practice.
I went insearch of a bigger caliber than my 30-06 and marlin 444 back in '94. I wanted a big enough caliber as to where i could hunt the thinned skin game anywhere in the world. Maybe i could do a special hunt someday. I chose the remington 338win mag because of its 4,000ft lbs @ the muzzle and its 2,700ft lbs still at 200yds thats the muzzle energy of an '06 at 200yds. While sighting it in i found out it doesn't shoot the new remington ammo very good because the groups were much bigger than i'm used to with my other scoped rifles. I switched to the winchester super X 338wm 225gr power points and my last two shots on the scope adjustment i put two rounds thru the same hole at 100yds benchrested taking the "X" completely out of the target dead center in the black. I then set up 4 seperate bulls eye targets at 100yds and put 4rds of winchester ammo in the 700 rem. I stood up and had the sling adjusted to my arm so the gun is much steadier. I picked up each bulls eye in the scope as fast as i could run the bolt and fire and i put each round 1" from the center of each target. I do not shoot this rem 700 in 338wm that much to save the barrel and its accuracy. Rifles as good as this in accuracy we don't see that often. The gun smith at remington did an awesome job. I have made one pin point shot at 170yds when me and my older brother had a shoot off oneday. He made an awesome shot at 100yds with his 30-06 using my reloads and i did a shot at 170yds. As we walked up to the knot hole i aimed at he laughed and said i missed. As we walked around the back of the tree the back was splintered out were the round went thru the 15'' diameter tree at that distance. This round is like a mack truck. It took me a few months of going over and over the ballastics charts and i looked at the 7mm rem mag, the 300win mag and even the 375 holland and holland too. But the 338 win mag at the time just stood out as the winner. Since then they offer many new 338 rounds but the old 338win mag still performs to this day. Bill
BTW; the number 1 sniper in the world with the highest rate of kills was finnish in WW2. He had a swede mauser m96 scoped but he prefered his finnish mosin m27 with no scope. His highest rate of kills was 500+ in 3 months i believe. When the russian mosins were captured by the finn's the bolt actions were reworked and the receivers were shimmed until they shot 1'' moa's at 100yds then they were put into service. The finn's and the swede's were very fussy about the accuracy and condition of there rifles too. If you search for; Rifles of the White Death a great story will come up about a battle between the finnish soldiers and the russian soldiers. I believe that 4,000 russians attacked 32 finn's and the russians retreated with 3,600 left and only 4 or 5 finns were left.
