Anyone here consider single shot rifles for certain sporting/tactical uses?
I am thinking of a TC Encore with a tactical scope.
You tend to lose your sight picture through the scope anyway. Unless your semi auto or trained to use a tactical type bolt gun.
Why not do single, cold bore shot and leave it at that. You only have seconds to follow up maybe one shot if you miss on game or anything for that matter.
There are also alot of single shot bolt actions out there too. (Big calibers)
Single shot actions...solid bottom receivers are nothing new really. Benchrest rifles have had solid bottom receivers for a long time and are very popular.
They are simply stiffer than an action that has been cut to fit a magazine.
If you're looking for a tactical rig, they're not the best option, but for target work or varming hunting they're great.
Remington has produced one for many years, the Reminton 700 40xBR is a single shot. Savage is the newest kid on the block offering one. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/custom_shop/40-x/model_40-XRBR_KS.asp
They also come in a variety of calibers and action sizes. Cooper Arms has been producing incredibly accurate semi-custom single shot bolt action rifles for a long time. (They've been very popular until recently when the CEO publicly backed Obama in the elections. He's since been asked to step down as CEO of the company)
I have a number of single shot actions, one is a Wichita Arms Mk40 bolt action pistol, the rest are benchrest or varmint rifles.
i own many T/C contenders and only 30+ barrels
for the contender frames. rifles, 410 shotgun and pistol cal's
i also have 2 encore frames. 1 is rifle 1 is pistol and not
so many barrels. in rifle i have 7mm mag , 30-06. 45-70
and a custom 300 wby mag GI5 the 30-06 and 45-70
are iron sights others are scoped with leopolds
i only have 1 encore pistol barrel 30-06 with leopold
it likes the greek ammo i been feeding it.
i enjoy them a lot GI8
the encore 30-06 does kick
about the same as the contender
30-30 pistol. the 45-70 takes the cake
in the contender. i had it reamed for 500 +
grain bullets with a fast powder it barks.
shooting T/C's teaches you good shooting.
you make that 1 shot count and a lot of fun
cal.s. like my 5" 45 acp and my 21" 30 carbine
are tack drivers so are the 22's. fun to shoot
over a hour being a single shot less ammo GI6
I've had Browning high and low wall rifles and they shot extremely well. I also had one of those cheap New England Arms in .223 that shot under 1/2 MOA IF you could hang with the terrible trigger. Break-open type single shots are neat, to some extent, but I never liked their balance for anything but bench rest shooting. I don't own any anymore.
This is good stuff to hear from all of you about.
Most single shots don't have all the accuracy issues of ones that repeat.
I had a Single shot NEF/H&R Ultra Varmint in .223. Topped with a decent Swift 4 - 14 x 44. Got dime size groups at 100 yds once I learned how to sight it in. But didn't see the shooting challenge in it anymore.
Like a dumby I traded to get a semi auto black rifle for the iron sights. Did that enjoyed the iron sights but lost the tack driving accuracy of the Ultra. It was cheap rifle to get setup with too.
The black rifle gave way to yet another project later.
Just think any single shot type has alot going for it if the user does not mind the time given to cycling and crafting each shot.
A friend of mines' son has one of those (H&R ?) break open style rifles in .223 it's dang embarising when somebodys' kid out shoots your 1000 dollar AR with a 120 dollar rifle!!
Got it at a gun show......I wanted something to plink with. I was actually looking for a .223 left handed bolt gun.....I got tired of looking and picked up the Ruger and a cheap scope. I have had a ball with it at the 100 yard line.
New to posting to this forum, but been lurking a while.
This is a .338 Lapua, BAT action (single shot left eject for ease of grabbing ejects and loading ) 1200 yd targets get boring. Rock solid platform for extreme distance, wouldn't want a single shot for a close-in weapon (<600 yds)
Great forum, costs me a fortune on what I need to make my M1A better, but great info... Thanks
Absolutely the best $1300 you can spend, its a half moa rifle on a bad day out of the box. I have the 6.5-284 but the 12f also comes in .308.http://www.savagearms.com/12f_class.htm
i LEARNED TO SHOOT ON A SINGLE. i WAS NOT TRUSTED WITH THE PUMP UNTIL i MASTERED "SHOOTING". bOTH MY GIRLS STARTED WITH SINGLE SHOTS. Sorry on caps. We have a few New england Handi Rifles wich are great for varmint hunting. Some single bolt guns and a Rem Rolling block in 45-70. They bring home the meat! I love the simplicity of a single and knowing the shot better count. If I had to protect me and mine M1 and M14 are at the ready!

I switched to single shots for hunting 5 years ago. Out of the box Ruger #1, 30-06 hits the same spot, rain, snow or shine. Some are not so lucky, but this one shoots. I also have a #3 for cast bullets.. still playing with that one.
My pride and joy is a 1880's Whitney Arms Phoenix in 45-70. So far I have taken 1 very large hog with it. Whitney was purchased by Winchester in 1885 or so and shut down. They were Winchesters #1 competition and been building firearms longer. They had a lever rifle and also made pistols.
Some of the most interesting firearms reading I have done is the books by Ned Roberts on Single shot rifles. (Actually anything by Ned is interesting.)
Somthing to consider is that some falling block actions are extremely strong. If you look in the reloading manuals, sometimes there are seperate sections for Ruger #1's because they can handle more pressure.
There is a gentleman in NM that makes a .50BMG falling block.. I want one bad, bad , bad. GI6
A friend of mine has a beautiful Ruger #1 in 7mm Rem Mag, that is a real tack driver.
I'm not a real huge fan of the Single shot, although I do like the lines of the old Winchester 1885 'High Wall'.
Still, given my druthers, and the cash, I'd much rather spend it on an original Winchester Model 1895 in .405 Winchester. (Teddy Roosevelt's favorite.) It would be more my cup of tea.
But I would'nt exactly say 'No, thanks', if someone were to offer me a Winchester 'High Wall'. I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid. ICONWINK
The problem with the Rugers is they are either outstanding or poor. But boy, when you get a good one, its something. Plus nice to carry on long hunts.
A good friend shot a nice buffalo 3 years ago with your dream rifle. 2 shots of .405 did the trick.
I will see if I can find the link to the .50 cal single shot, you guys would love it.
Best Regards,
HD
