Went to the range today with a new rifle

This group is after only 35 rounds down the tube, cleaned with each of first ten shots after each shot. Then I cleaned every three shots. It is almost broken in. Shooting at 100 yards.

Savge 12 FCV in 223 Remington, Athlon 2-24 X 50 Scope with 1/10 mil, Atlas Bipod.

Load 24.5gr AA2230, 55gr FMJBT Hornaday, 2.220 OAL, CCI primer. Vel 3140 avg.

I figure when it is broke in I should be able to cover 5 shots with a dime instead of a quarter.
I really like the gun by the way.

Thanks from dsdmmat and Dougboffl

For that rifle, with those bullets, that's a good start.

Is the barrel contacting the stock with the bipod loaded?

Keep us up to date with the rifle and the scope. I have been curios about those scopes for a good while now.

How do you like the Athlon? I thought about one but reviews are mixed.

It is not a Nightforce, but for a scope around 275-375 it is a good scope with a lifetime warranty. Yes I do like it, and own five of them. Would I buy another? Yep! The most expensive scope I own is a Quigley Ford. It makes Nightforce look like a Tasco. But, that is just my opinion.

Athlon and Vortex seem to be the mid-range scopes right now. Leupold is pricing themselves out of the market. I would just save my coin and buy a Nightforce, or wait for the Quigley Fords to go on sale again.

To tell you the truth I did not see if the stock was touching the barrel, that is something I will have to pay attention to the next time. Thanks for the heads up.

The composite stock is definitely Savage's weakest aspect. I was almost excited when they announced the AccuStock, but learned (but haven't verified myself) that it's also flexible enough to allow for forearm to barrel contact.

It's likely for my next rifle to be another Savage, and it'll end up in a Bell and Carlson.

My 12VSS absolutely loves 50 grain Sierra BlitzKings.

I have a Savage (Distributor Edition) in 204 Ruger. It has the accustock and trigger. No issues at all with stock. Only time legs are loaded is when shooting off mat......mainly shot in a ground grizz field...soft dirt or grass.

No placebo break in.....just a off the shelf Savage barrel. Out of box, general barrel cleaning, and shot 32gr Vmax well under a dime at 100yds. 39gr SBK's about the same......40gr vmax....yuck bigger than a half dollar. It likes the lighter bullets for sure.....and many a ground grizz has bang flopped at decent distance....
