savage/stevens 458 socom build

I decided I wanted to build a bolt action rifle , so I ordered an 18inch stainless steel barrel from southern ballistic research , then ordered head space guages , action wrench , made me some hard wood blocks for the barrel and started looking for a donor . I found a stevens 200 in 308 for 250.00 and went at it . I got a stock from boyds and found a metal trigger guard on the net. used egw base and weaver tactical rings . I mounted up my bushnell 10x so I can get it sighted in and check the accuracy . Yesterday i mocked up some bullets based off of what I shoot through my rock river 458 and found I can actually have a 3 shot bolt gun , I did have to tweak the lips on the blind magazine ever so slight but it cycles fine when you work the action like you mean it . hopefully I get a chance to put some rounds down range in a few days .

I'm in the habit of having a bolt gun to mirror any semi auto's that I have or build. I built a .458 SOCOM AR and have shot it quite a bit and do like the caliber so maybe it's time that I do a bolt gun in the same caliber.

Likewise I like the caliber too. You rifle looks very nice. Not sure if I want to forego the expense of a bolt gun to go with the AR platform .458 tho......have to give that some thought.....

Let us know how it papers and functions......

the reason I decided to go with a bolt gun is basicly with an ar you are limited to about 35,000 psi due to the bolt face being modified . with a 308 bolt head 44,000 psi is doable and possibly a bit more . I have been shooting my rock river for 10 years and know the limits of my gas gun not to say a 300 grain bullet going 1800 fps wont get the job done , it has and does frequently . I am going to retire in about 2 years and have the intention of going on a bear hunt as a walking out the door present to my self . this may be the rifle I use .

Makes perfectly good sense! Hope the last two years go by quickly for you.

I understand, having two 45/70 lever guns (hotter load capable) and a few "just in case" bolt guns in .375 H&H, 416 Ruger and 458 Lott.

Thanks from jwb47
