My New Weatherby Vanguard HBAR .308 - Range Report

Hi Everyone,

I have not purchased a bolt rifle for a long time! Most of my rifles are of the military variety [M14, M1 and M1 Carbines].

Many of my bolt action rifles were handed down to me from my grandfather and dad [both of which have passed]. The others I purchased many years ago when I had limited funds and always purchased used rifles.

I am lucky to have a son that enjoys weapons, hunting, fishing etc. He recently reminded me that he can’t ever remember me purchasing a brand new bolt rifle and since he recently exited the Army [Captain] he has been getting back into shooting loner range bolt rifles and is now only about five hours away. So we hope to hunt more and meet up to do some longer range shooting.

We both have hunted with Weatherby’s for many years [he used my Weatherby .308 carbine length for many years deer hunting and later purchased his own Weatherby in .308]. So I did some research looking at the Remington 700’s, Savage and other nice offerings, but really liked the Weatherby Vanguard HBAR. After searching for price information and doing other research I found a new one I liked at a very good price on Gunbroker. I also wanted the Weatherby because my set-up is very similar to my sons and we can share certain load information, set-ups etc. Hopefully I will outshoot him – but that is not likely………..

I know many great bolt actions are out there but I really wanted this one. I will post some range reports once I can get to the range and find my preferred load.

Here are some specifics:
Manufacturer: Weatherby
Model: Vanguard H-Bar Range Certified
Caliber: .308 Winchester
Overall Length: 42"
Barrel: 22" #3 Contour, Cold Hammer-Forged, Heavy Barrel
Weight: 8.75 lbs
Capacity: 5 Rounds Hinged Floorplate
Twist: 1:10"
Length of pull: 13.625"
Sights: None, Drilled/Tapped
Stock: Hand Laminated Composite Monte Carlo Stock
Trigger: Match Quality two stage – adjustable down to 2.5lbs
Bolt: Fluted Bolt Body
3 position safety
Scope: Primary Arms 4x14x44 with FFP Mil Dot Reticle – I have used the HUDD reticle .308 version with my hunting M14 rifle with excellent results and look forward to trying this version out
Mount – HOWA Short Action Picatinny
Rings – Weaver (4) hole tactical/skelton
Bi-Pod – 6” - 9” Swivel

After installing the mount, rings and scope I took a few pictures of the final set-up in my shop.

Enjoy – M1Army

Looks like a fine rifle. We are all about the M14 usually, but a great bolt gun is a staple in every serious shooter's kit. I like .308, there is tons of data on it already available.

Going to the range to shoot her for the first time this weekend so I will let you know and will post a range report.

It sure feels good and the cheek weld is pretty darn good!

Thanks! I've been thinking about a bolt action in .308 lately. I've looked at Ruger and Remington so far, never even thought about Weatherby. Nice looking rifle...

Hi - sorry for the delay.

I did get to the range and was able to shoot my new Weatherby Vanguard HBAR. I took two rifles my new Weatherby and my [August 2016 M14 of the month winner].

Below is the link for the M14 Range Report if you want to see that post - just click on the link:
Range Report BULA M21-DMR

Now for the Weatherby:

Range Information:
* Gun Club of Georgia
* 100 yard indoor range
* Conditions - fully climate controlled - a great place to shoot!
* Shot off Caldwell bags - front and rear

Load Information:
Case - FC 12
Case Trim - 2.005
OAL - 2.82
Avg Ogive - 10 sampled with Avg. comparator @ 2.1445
Powder/Charge - H4895 / 42 Gr
Primer - CCI #34
Bullet - Nosler Custom Competition 168 Gr

Comments:
* I bore sighted the scope at my shop and took 2 shots at 25 yards to start, made a few adjustments and fired several other rounds to confirm. Then I moved to 50 yards and made 3 shots with one final adjustment.
* I moved to 100 yards and shot my fist 5 shot group and made my final adjustments.
* I fired two more groups of 5 and kept my best group [I was running out of range time] - which measured .534
* The rifle shoots excellent and I kept the trigger pull as it came from the factory even though it is adjustable. After shooting the M14 so much this trigger was excellent without any adjustment.
* The Scope - Primary Arms 4-14X44mm Riflescope - Mil-Dot - this is my second primary arms scope and it is excellent. I wanted the Mil-Dot scope on this bolt rifle and once I was all zeroed in - I reset the turrets to zero -> the scope has removable turrets that I could set my windage and elevation to zero. So now I can either use the mil-dot to adjust or turn the scope adjustments on the scope for longer shots for any necessary windage/elevation adjustments.

Below is my best group at .534 - it only looks like three rounds hit the target, but the upper part of the group had four rounds pass through [or I missed the entire target which is not likely]. When I turned the target over you could see that more that one shot went through the upper/top section of the target.

I really do like this weapon! My plans are to use this to shoot "longer Range Targets" with my son and for hunting particularly if I get out-west again.

I picked this rifle up for $689 brand new on gunbroker and function, finish, fit etc. are excellent. I really like the 22" barrel and even though the barrel is a heavier profile the rifle is easy to carry.
