savage axis .223

i just ordered a savage axis in 223. 250.00-50.00 savage rebate = 200.00. comes with a cheapo scope and rings. I don't really have a need for it but i figured 200 bucks for a light recoiling plinker was too hard to pass up.

I may end up giving it to a friends 12 year old son that I take to the range quite a bit. He doesn't have a rifle of his own, he shoots my stuff. They don't have much money so I figure for a couple hundred bucks santa can give him a present he won't soon forget. Ho Ho Ho !

I had two of the Savage Axis rifles in .223 and .308. I got them in part trade for one of my M14 builds, and for inexpensive/beater/truck gun type bolt actions,
both were SUPERBLY ACCURATE.

However,
I sold them when trimming down the herd.

A few years later
when I wanted another
inexpensive/beater/truck gun type .308 Bolt action rifle,
I nearly bought another AXIS.
BUT,
right next to the Axis in the stire rack was a STAINLESS RUGER AMERICAN COMPACT,
ON SALE,
for only a few $$$ more.

The Ruger was better finished, not quite as FUGLY, and Iiked the short throw/ 60 degree bolt design .

WITH THE RIGHT AMMO,
That Ruger would put 4 shots into the same hole at 100 yds.
Pretty darned good for an
"inexpensive/beater/truck gun type bolt action".

Hard to go wrong these days wjth even an entry level inexpesnsive bolt rifle,
MOST OF WHICH WILL BE MORE ACURATE THAN ANY M14 TYPE RIFLE,
no matter how much $$$ you put into the 14.

BUT,
THE ONE RIFLE I HAVE LEFT,
IS STILL AN M14.

I guess logic and economics are not the only reasons involved in choosing a rifle.
(;-)

I have a Savage Axis .223 with a Bushnell AR 223 scope, the largest magnifying one. What a combo! $465 total and it will, with hand loads, make a touching clover leaf at 100. Used it for ground squirrels out to 200 when we lived on the wife's families homestead.

Right now an local fleet supply has the Savage Axis in 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, Bull Barrel, digital cam stock, Bushnell 3x12 scope, for $399 with a $50 mail in rebate. .Almost bit, but it doesn't come in a left hand model.

They aren't my style, but I've heard great things about them. $300 can get you a lot of rifle these days.

We have about 300 rounds through this rifle. My impressions are as follows.
* the action feels like a 200 dollar rifle. it's stiff and takes some effort to cycle. defintely not as smooth as my old model 70. It has smoothed up a bit since new.
* scope is about what you would expect.
* 4 round mag is plastic and metal. it usually seats correctly but sometimes takes a little extra attention.
*Accuracy is shocking. i've had no problem spinning the 4 inch plate tree at 250 yards.

overall I really like this cheap little shooter. so does the kid i gifted it too.

I am sure Savage makes a nice gun. I just happened to own a bad one years ago and I have never gotten past that. Enjoy! I will stay with my Rems, Rugers, Brownings, etc. To each his own and thank God we can still have a choice.

Thanks from Wasted ammo

In my exspierence savage barrels are great, it's the trigger, mag, stock that made me stop buying them. My 223 axis had a 10.9 pound trigger break! From a rest it would shoot a nickel at 100 yards. I didn't like the trigger.
