Wasn't referencing your post JWB47, I was just trying to point out to the OP that if He didn't need the longer range ability of the .308 cartridge, he might do better with a different cartridge if he wanted a short barrel. I put together a shorter barreled .308 AR, and as much as I liked the handling of the gun, the muzzle blast was excessive. My friends all told me that it spit fire every time I fired it, I figure that I was wasting a lot of the powder in the .308 case.

you could put one of those pigs on it to direct the muzzle blast

That would make it danger close to an xm3. I had no real issues shooting that rifle to it's max effective range, and it had an 18 ish inch barrel.

My Remmy 700 5R has the 20 inch threaded barrel on it. I feel a 20 inch 308 barrel is optimum. I get just under 1MOA 3-shot groups with the factory recalled trigger. I plan on replacing the trigger myself and forego sending the rifle back to remington. Good luck in your decision.

My Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle will shoot under 1 MOA @ 100.

.308 with a 18" bbl. I LOVE this gun!

Quality of the barrel plays big factor when going short. A short, tight bore will do quite well at 1k. A short bolt gun is quite handy and should make you happy. Be warned that you may find yourself shooting it more than your others. What are the details of the one your looking at?

I gotcha on that . my buddies definatly spits fire . we did put my can on it and it made a big difference . I saw but did not shoot a 12.5 inch ar10 sbr and cringed at the thought .
by the way its nice to have a civil discussion instead of all the grenade tossing on some other forums . this is a great forum .

I have the same 20" FN that nf1e has and agree that it outshoots my old 26" 700 Police Sniper model.

Here is my M1917 made 1917. So it's almost 100 years old. It's a Remington and its is the original barrel. Well they butchered the receiver and took the from sights off and mounted a scope onto it. I shortened the barrel to 16.5". Let me just say it is handy and kicks like mule with full power 30/06 loads. Gave me a fat lip last time I shot it. It really like the reduced recoil ammo I loaded my son so he does not learn the flinch with his 30/06. I have not sighted it in yet.

Good find and good luck developing a accurate long distance load. I have been searching for a year now for my R700 AAC-SD 20" .308. I've found fast enough and very accurate, not both in the same load though. McRees Chassis, Timney, and Vortex Viper HST. It's been fun looking though.

Hey you guys!

I used to shoot a 14" barreled Rem mod 660? in a wood handgun stock I refinished in 7mm IMHSA... Does that count?

Was young and in my 20's but think I loaded IMR 4895 and sierra 160 grain bullets

Saw a Ruger GS post. I have the 308 in 16.1". Seems accurate enough for me at 100, and has been reliable. It has the added benefit of peep sights, since I didn't want to scope it. I do admit I'd likely only use it for 200 yards or less. I do get looks at the range though, as it is definitely loud, and no suppressor here in CA.
