I will be joining this club soon. I went to the PX yesterday with the intentions of buying another 10/22 for a new project. While looking at their inventory I see a RPR Gen2 in .308. The price wasn't the lowest but with no tax or transfer fee it put it in the ballpark.. The salesman says "we have a sale next week for Father's Day, 15% off all guns". I was still going to buy it yesterday, because it would be gone at that price, but the salesman then says "we can do the paperwork today and hold the gun until next Friday". All in all, it will be over $500 below retail, out the door.
My wife said "Happy Father's Day" and went to pick out some new shoes, LOL, while I did the paperwork. I ordered a new rail section, bipod, and case as soon as I got home. I have a SWFA SS 10x42 I'm going to run for now. I have shot a Gen1 with the factory buttstock and it worked for me so I'm not upgrading yet. I'll probably get a PRS Gen3 later.
That's a hell of a deal AP, whenever the very first Gen I's came out and before they got popular I heard of folks getting them for $1k but whenever they cuaght on the price jumped and has since leveled off a little. I bought mine whenever they were hard to find and the prices were about peaked, paid $1,400 out the door for my Gen I .308 and at the time thought that was a decent price, not exceptionally good nor exceptionally high, just decent at the time. A year later I bought my Gen II 6.5 CM for like $1,200.
Well, picked her up today! Spent some of the day cleaning and getting to know her. Got a hella deal on a PRS Gen3 while at the PX, like $70 off so I had to get it.
After figuring how to get the RPR butt stock off I put the PRS on, a Green Blob 9 slot rail, Green Blob bipod, and started mounting my scope, started. After rooting around in my parts stash, all I have are low rings GRRR. Ordered some high rings and another hard case. My other new case is a 42", a RPR with a PRS is 44" GRR again. Well, I did need a new hard case for my AR SR so it wasn't a total waste.
The wife got another pair of new shoes.
So, sometime next week I'll post a range report LOL.
Here's my promised range report.
Temp was already 90 at 0900, wind light but gust from 9 o'clock. Ammo was standard issue M80 ball, I grabbed the wrong can. Scope was a SWFA SS 10x mil/mil I had laying around.
I did the recommended barrel break in (shoot 1, clean, then shoot 2, clean...up to 5) First 3 rounds during the process were one hole at 25 yards, promising... I made adjustments during the break in procedure so I would be on paper at 100 yards.
First 5 shot group at 100 yards...
All the other groups look similar, 0.65 MOA with M80 ball.
I haven't had a rifle this accurate, with nothing done to it, out of the box, ever.
I can tell I'm gonna need more scope!
Going by through the same hole is problematic, all those close looks to see what hole it went through again. That rifle has made me look like I'm a better shooter than I am.
I fired my friend's 6.5 RPR a few weeks ago, he finally put a decent scope on it (?-24x50 SIG.) Put 5 of my handloads in about 1/2" at 100yds. I had forgotten how heavy it was... Still, a nice shooting rifle, and easy to shoot well!
I was finally able to pick up my .223 caliber RPR from my FFL last night (he went on an unplanned vacation during the NJ state government shutdown over the 4th of July weekend since the NJSP weren't running background checks while this was going on).
Everything looks great on the rifle out of the box (the handrail is centered around the barrel). I'm going to tear it down over the weekend for "deep cleaning" and mount my scope; hopefully, I'll get it to the range next weekend to zero it.
The only upgrade that I'm planning on doing at the moment is swapping out the factory stock for a Magpul version. My only "complaint" about the gun is how they set up the adjustments on the factory one.
I can't honestly say that I hate the factory stock but I noticed that, when I shot my friend's RPR a few weeks ago before I ordered mine, I kept on snagging the adjustment clips with my sleeves.
The "closed" adjustment controls of the Magpul stock just seem like a better option for me.
I'm going to put my cash towards some match ammo for now and then swap out the stock down the road. I may even end up keeping the factory stock if it doesn't turn out to be the issue that I think that it might
Second time out. 90 degrees, no wind, a lot of humidity (for El Paso). I used my current handloads (LC case, CCI 200 primer, 41.5g of IMR4895, SMK 168) I cooked up for my M1As. Going to work up a ladder for this rifle and see what that gets me.
The rifle is definitely better than I am. Going to call the 7 o'clock shot a flyer, LOL.
5 round group, 0.647 MOA at 100 yards.
PS In re the buttstock. I didn't really hate the factory buttstock but I got a hella deal on the PRS Gen3. I like the "enclosed" adjustment system of the PRS over the open system of the factory stock. Here in El Paso it is VERY sandy/dusty and it will clog stuff up easily.
Functional changes are wonderful. I totally get the dust/dirt thang.
About the clips on the stock stock. Make sure the clips are facing inward...or Down for the vertical cheek piece and forward for the length of pull.
I'm so glad that the RPR can keep up with most custom builds....at least I can keep up with most custom builds when I shoot F class in Elk River.
People hate my break. After I shot the first time the committee placed me at the end of the line. Now they leave that open for me. It's a bit more forward than the other positions and only one guy has to deal with it. I love it. No one to really distract me to my right.
Just picked up my NIB RPR this afternoon after a 6 month wait for delivery. As I am new to this platform - is there anything I should do or not do on my first range trip? I am planning on breaking-in the barrel with Dave Tubb's FinalFinish
system of coated bullets which several competitors who would know what they are talking about have recommended. Has anyone used these bullets? If so, what are the pros and cons? (NOT trying to reopen the barrel break-in subject)!
Thanks for the heads up - I did order the Gen3 model, so I guess I'll just return the rifle tube to Midway as long as the stock will the existing tube. I didn't even notice that the stock came with the adapter.
It's looking like my .308 Rem 700 build will be ready for me to pick up on Friday so I'll be able to take the RPR and the 700 to the range on Saturday for their first shots.
That rifle in 6.5 CM will shoot 500 yards with ease, congrats! I never did anything special as far as break-in on my any of my rifles including my RPRs and have never felt like I missed anything by not doing a specified break-in. I had my .308 RPR out yesterday and was shooting 3/4 MOA @ 200 yards, the 6.5 CM will do better than that and with both rifles I never really did a ton of load development, found a load that worked for both rifles and stuck with that ... I believe whenever I start fine tuning my load development both of those rifles will shoot much better.
I ordered a Ruger Precision Rifle chambered in 6.5 Creemoor and will pick it up today. I am waiting for a long range shooting friend to tell me what glass he has laying around excess to his needs. The end goal is to mount my Nightforce 5.5-22 scope on the RPR and use it for punching paper past 1,000 yards. Right now it's sitting atop a .308 I use for shooting at 1,000 yards and closer.
Called Ruger this morning about barrel break-in for the RPR. They said in effect: don't bother. Just do the normal cleaning that would be done to any recently purchased gun....just shoot it.
I'm taking my RPR out for the first time on Saturday and just plan to shoot 5-10 rounds and then run a few patches wetted with Hoppes down the barrel (followed by dry patches) just to wipe out any metal particles or whatever out of the barrel, shot another 10 rounds, repeat the wet/dry patch process again and then call it "good".
I took my RPR out today for the first time and it was an awesome trip.
I did notice that I was having trouble getting comfortable with the factory pistol grip. I've got average size hands (large size gloves) but I noticed that I was consistently pulling down on the trigger rather than straight back.
So, it looks like I'll need to swap it out with something else.
I've noticed that the built in grip on my KRG chassis has nice wide palm swells and I can get a consistent straight pull on that gun.
Can anyone recommend a good replacement that's got a nice swell and a vertical grip angle?
I remember more than a couple of folks on one of the RPR FB pages recommend Ergo grips, I can't remember exactly which model though ... http://ergogrips.net
There was a guy who was making custom wooden pistol grips for tube guns a while back. They were individually fitted to your hand. I don't have his contact info any more, but you might turn something up on Google.
I'll see which one feels better on the RPR and return the other
