| Distance bolt gun
I'm thinking of building a good bolt gun. I want it to be very accurate, reasonably light wt.,308?, scoped. It wil be mainly for range shooting and my pleasure.
Open for suggestions. I have found several places that supply an accurized Rem 700 type reciever. I know it will not be cheap, but if I do it over time it will be like lay-a-way.
Long action? Short action? Why? Leaning towards short. http://www.6mmbr.com/actions.html |

Surgeon custom action, krieger barrel, Custom McMillan Stock?
GA Precision, Texas Brigade, George Gardner/GAP Precision
Will enjoy this thread for weeks!

Hey,
Like everything else building it yourself will help make it suit you.(a good thing)How light do you want it? Below are cost and weight of my long range guns.
My Remington 700P 308 Winchester LE Police Sniper was less than $900 in the door wt@9 lbs.
My Savage 10/110 FCP HS Precision 338 LAPUA MAG was $1270 in the door and wt@10.7lbs.

IMHO, I used a custom build off a 700 action with a AI barrel, timney trigger group, with a Mcmillian M-24 stock. That package shot better than me. All in all, $2,200 less optics.
Less than 1/2 MOA. Just sold though, to buy my M25, I think I made the right decision?

I would start with a remy 700 sps shoot it until you get happy with your long range skill. Then slowly change out parts to make it awesome. That's what I did. Shot 300 rounds to where I was hitting 800 yards like it was nothing and had a constant 3/4 to 1 moa. Then I changed my stock to a AICS, rock creek m40 contour barrel at 20", got it Trued and blues. Only thing I need to do is get a better trigger. The X mark Pro isn't too bad, no creep at all but it's a little heavy. This rifle gets me constant 1/2 moa when I do my part. Plus it looks awesome:)
Or go balls out and get a total custom gun.

What distance are you going to shoot? I had a 20" barrel on mine and stuck to 800 yrd max, mostly less than 600 yrd for LEO purposes. Long action, you can do .338 lapua or .300 mag stuffs? If you looking 1000 plus, go long action, if not, stay with short action.

Long action is the way to go bc if you decide later you want to build bigger you always have that option. Shilen barrels are good to start with a number 5 contour isn't to heavy

Remy 700 5R SS. Easy 0.5 moa gun for a $1000. Your choice 308 or 300 wm. As you find the need upgrade to badger bottom metal, mag, bolt knob, jewel trigger, etc.
Uh, just what dprice3844444 says...me too:)

I was seriously looking at the Remington 700 5R but didn't really want it in Stainless so I ended up going with the FN SPR
Have yet to see how it shoots
For serious distance you're going to want to go bigger than the .308,
I love the .308 but you've got to know it's limits

Click on tube guns. Might as well do it for all the performance it's worth. You never get all your $$$ back out of one of these dedicated projects.

I shoot my 700 PSS out to 800-1000.
Savage also makes a great long gun on a HS precision stock.
