I have a buddy that has one of these in .243. Like him, it is ugly but boy does it shoot.

If I had an opportunity to get one, I would.

i have a 788 in 22-250. it shoots sub dime size groups at 100yds if i run the remington psp ammo through it. all i can say is: BUY IT! im not even going to ask how much he is selling it for because it is worth it. the nice ones go for around $400, which is what i paid for mine. i had to clean up the stock and barrel; bedded the stock; replaced the scope and front sight; and replaced the trigger. the triggers on the 788s suck.

the 788 is a cult classic because of their legendary accuracy. and i can not think of a more accurate round to shoot out of it than a 22-250!

here is mine before i restored it:

As everyone says... BUY IT

Every example in 22-250 I have seen, shot or heard of was outstandingly accurate. Win 45gr Varmint ammo will do 3in groups @ 200yrds out of my friends rifle. ( not bad for $275 with a cheap scope )

Butt ugly, gritty trigger, extremely accurate barrel and magazines are still available if you look a bit. You can re-sell it in a minute if you find you don't like it.

I still have my neighbor's rifle in my gun safe and I did test fire it. It has a scope on it but I'm convinced the scope and rifle aren't in sync. I only had one box of ammo to fire and at 50 yds I was barely on the paper and there was no more adjustment on the scope. That situation can easily be corrected by having my local gun shop bore sight the thing. All of the rounds that did hit the paper were tight - just way off center.

I haven't made up my mind yet as to whether I'll buy it. My neighbor is in the process of moving and has a lot on her plate right now.
