M24 300 Win Mag

Looking at buying a NIB M24 for $3,600. I've heard the 300WM has a pretty sharp kick. I was issued a Ruger 338 Mag in Alaska for the Fish & Wildlife Service and found it to be an easy shooter. Anyone here have experience with the 300 WM? What about the M24? I want to complement my M14 Scout with a pure sniper rifle capable of 1200 yard shots. I'm looking at scoping it with a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T M1 Illum. TMR Reticle. Any thoughts about this setup? Rings or bases? I'm thinking Badger Ordnance at this time. I'm kind of green with bolt guns, but I figure it still comes down to getting the cross hairs on the target.

The 300WM is a great round. I have a custom build on a Win. pre-64 action and Krieger barrel....Love it!!!! 1/2moa nor better all day with my reloads. If

you put a good muzzle break on it the recoil is not much more than the 308. Your scope choice is a good one and I would use Leupold rings & base to set

it up (Talley a good second choice).....No experience with the M24 but you will like the 300WM. Please keep us posted and add pictures when you can.

Will do, thanks--actually I was thinking of using Leupold base and rings as an option. Good to hear the kick is not bad.

I would get the Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 power scope instead. That 14x scope seems a bit underpowered for such a long-range sniper rifle.

Several items because you mentioned you're green to bolts. How set are you on specifically getting an M24? Understandable if it's a specific want, there are so many rifles that far out-perform the M24.

FWIW ... I advise you look at it from a package perspective:

$3600 rifle
$1260 scope
$300 base/rings

With this list, you're talking a $5200 system -- I imagine you're willing to spend some coin on a good rifle.

FWIW ... I would instead recommend something like a Sako TRG-42 300WM at about $2700. Offset the rest into a good optic, and you're in the ballpark for a Near or Spuhr mount and a used USO or PR 5-25.

I feel just a good recoil pad is quite sufficient for a 300wm. It is a pooch.

Recoil affects everyone differently as well as the desire to shoot rifles with compensators on them to reduce felt recoil. Recommend you attempt to attempt to fire some 300WM rifles prior to making your purchase.

+1. What size round did you shoot in your 338? A light round in a 338 vs a heavy round it a 300 may give the 300 more perceived recoil depending on the gun. Shoot what you're gonna hunt with then make your call. You may want to look at other options than the M24 though just so you have a reference point to work with before you buy.

The M24 is pretty heavy, so recoil will be about like a 3006 at the worst. In my 20's, I had one of the first Remington Sendero's in 300 win mag. The Sendero is similar to the M24 and/or the 700 police. Recoil was nothing, my dads Ruger 338, was another story, and I would not shoot it. The only problem I found with the 300 mag was barrel life was poor. By 800 rounds of light charged reloads, you could see the throat erosion when looking thru the breach.

I have 3 300 wins, a older BDL SS, its been magnaported. A featherweight with a muzzlebrake, and a AI with a brake. Reload, its a very versatile round, it will do amazing things with 190 and 208 gr projectiles. Slower powders will help on your throat erosion, the muzzle brakes will peel paint off a barn door. Neck sizing works well with the belted cases, there is also a die out there that is designed to full length resize these cases but not work them so much. If your set on the 24, more power to you, get what you want.

Yeah I've shot 300 WM before and the recoil does not bother me. I think I was shooting 200 grain out of my issue 338 Mag. I call myself green because I've never personally owned a bolt gun. Basically this is a LR self-defense rifle. My M14 has got me covered to 700 yards, so I need a rifle to cover 1200 yards. I'm in poaching country where I live and this is a defense rifle for anyone stupid enough to take a shot at a ranger on patrol. $5200 is a small price to pay to keep breathing. I figured the M24 is what I need.
