What load to start with in my Swedish Husqvarna rifle?

I have a Husqvarna (model 1951 I believe) Mauser-98 bolt action that I want to load for. It's .30-06 and can shoot through the same hole with Federal Gold Medal at 100yds. I want a good, solid starting point. Any ideas or suggestions? I currently shoot the 168gr Hornady A-max out of my M14 using Varget, PMC brass, and CCI primers.

How about starting with IMR 4895 powder, trying the 168g A-max, CCI primers, and a few different powder amounts to test? I started loading for the M14 a few months ago with success, and now I am new to loading for bolt action. I know the seating depth and OAL is vastly more important on bolt guns since there is no magazine length limitation.

I would do a clone of the Federal myself.

The original Hornady Garand Amax load was 46.8 grains of Varget with the 168 grain Amax bullet in Hornady / Winchester cases with Winchester primers. Often Varget isn't available and it sometimes loaded with a different charge weight of RL-15. 47.0 grains of Varget with either the 168 grain Sierra Match King or Amax bullet works very well.

The most accurate load found by Hornady was with 46.3 grains of VV N-135 with the 168 grain Amax bullet.

The most accurate 150 grain SST load was 58.5 grains of IMR-4350.

Funny you guys mention that load, as I did a load of 47.1gr Varget (as per Hornady manual) for 2700fps, with 168gr Hornady A-max bullets with an OAL of 3.3." My average groups at 100 yds prone with bipod was 0.75." That is pretty good, but I have shot the same with factory ammo and I know the Husky is capable of 1/2" groups or better. I'm going to try to lighten the powder charge a bit and see if that helps the accuracy a bit. Thanks!
