RAMMAC and others,

Really appreciative to have access to a tremendous wealth of knowledge on this forum. Thanks for allowing me the attempt to try to figure it out, though I was completely wrong - talk about some way fuzzy math. Are we sure the U.S. Gov doesn't have a need for people like me to train our next enemy we plan to fight so they can't shoot straight? ha!

I am glad to have you guys out here to challenge the assumptions and to help me learn. Having folks like you that are professionals in and out of the field from various backgrounds or skillsets is what makes this place really great. I haven't found any other place like it.

Thank you Gentlemen for always teaching me something new! I am trying to get it right so I can one day pass it on to my son. Boy, do I have a lot to learn!

With Much Thanks!
Steven Mac

Do you think it is unfortunate and misleading like that for a program to show him with a piece of paper and pencil - leading you to assume that he is doing a full math workup while under fire like that?

What kind of information do these guys carry with them in the field? From what a few have stated, simplified formulas card? or written constants (as you provided in previous PDF) and swags seem to be it?

I don't think it was misleading because it isn't a training video, it is just designed for entertainment mixed with enough real life stuff to make it feel like it's technical. Their goal wasn't to teach the viewer anything, it was sell the show and earn a profit. The only way I can say that I might call it misleading is that the show tries to portray itself as being informative when it really isn't.

Thanks from jmoore

They go into the shoot with a story card and an idea of where they want to go, agenda if you want, and get there by directing and/or editing. I have worked for production companies in Alaska in the 90s being the subject of knowledge. One was aired nationally, 1997 I beleive. Once they get to the editing, some of the things I said and did made me look stupid and even intelligent. I was quoted once out of context of the story line and it was a flat out lie of what I said putting me against someone else, AK state government DOT to stir up controversy. Had a chat with the editor that got very heated but in the end he won. When you go into these things with a contract, not much you can stop or change once it is complete.

The new military is very electronic now. We were taught math and to use a calculator, had to be a TI83 I believe in my failing memory is about as whizz bang electro as we got. My last few years I was confused at best with all the new button gadgets and it is worse now. The new troops seemed to pick it up with ease. GPS I understood and like, and even prefer it over a compass but compass skill must be high though.

Here are all of your ranging formulae, depending on what unit of measurement you are measuring the target in, whether you want the resulting distance in yards or meters, and whether you are measuring using mils, moa ("true" MOA of 1.0472") or s-moa ("Shooter's moa" of 1"). Whether you use moa or s-moa is dependant upon how your scope is set up by the manufacturer.

I teach a block on ranging at my school. I was a USMC Scout/Sniper in the early and mid-90's; we didn't have LRF's when I was in!

(Height of Target (yards) x 1000) / mils = Distance to Target (yards)

(Height of Target (inches) x 27.778) / mils = Distance to Target (yards)

(Height of Target (inches) x 25.4) / mils = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (meters) x 1000) / mils = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (cm) x 10) / mils = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (inches) x 95.5) / moa = Distance to Target (yards)

(Height of Target (inches) x 87.32) / moa = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (meters) x 3437.75) / moa = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (cm) x 34.37) / moa = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (inches) x 100) / s-moa = Distance to Target (yards)

(Height of Target (inches) x 91.44) / s-moa = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (meters) x 3600) / s-moa = Distance to Target (meters)

(Height of Target (cm) x 36) / s-moa = Distance to Target (meters)
