The specifications vary depending upon who builds them. The Tanker you refer to is not a US GI item, it is strictly a commercial concoction. Each gunsmith cutting up op rods, barrels, and operating components has his own methods and different dimension, thus nothing interchanges.

The handguards are also very different amongst gunsmiths.

As Bill notes there is no standard design.

Almost every Ordnance company in WW2 and probably Korea experimented with short barrelled versions of the M1 Rifle. A couple of good working samples were sent back to Springfield which then produced a couple of prototypes themselves.

Most of these experimental one-offs were intended for parachute and glider operations, not in tanks where the M3 (or other) submachinegun was a part of crew equipment until very recently.

A well executed tanker is a handy weapon, but spare parts are not a strong point as they're all slightly different.

Hello manualride,,I just received my M1 Tanker back from Tim Strait (Warbird) who is a Forum member and a AWESOME guy, and even a better Gunsmith ! As Bill and Chuck S state I'm sure there are many different configurations and specs but I beleive mine has only a different BBL. which is 308 and a shorter op-rod and spring, also the Handguard is alot shorter. Maybe you could get ahold of Warbird through PM or e-mail and he could tell you the majoir difference,,I'll tell ya one thing, its a beautiful rifle and it shoots like a dream,,good luck and if you want one don't hesitate to have Tim build ya one !! :) http://www.m-14forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13565
